The six perfections will not be complete. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment will not be complete. Inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, the emptiness of the nature of non-things, the immeasurables, the meditations, the formless absorptions, the noble truths, the eight liberations, the nine progressive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, the superknowledges, the samadhis, the doors of dharani, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha will not be complete. Chapter Thirty-Six. The Buddha-field will not be purified. Sentient beings will not be ripened. If the Buddha-field is not completely purified and sentient beings are not completely ripened, then he will not attain complete and perfect enlightenment. Why is that? Because this dedication is poisonous. Furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he should examine it in this way: 'The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, should dedicate these roots of virtue with this Dharma-nature. If they are dedicated in this way, they will become a dedication.' Likewise, I should also dedicate to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment with that same Dharma-nature. This is a dedication that does not belong to the three realms. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: 'Subhuti, well done, well done! As you say, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, whatever aggregate of dedication there is, is of the nature of signlessness, of the nature of unborn, of the nature of unceasing, of the nature of undefiled, and of the nature of unpurified.'

Of the nature, and the nature of the absence of things, and the nature of the emptiness of one's own characteristics, and the nature of the realm of phenomena, and the nature of suchness, and the nature of unerroneous suchness, and the nature of non-other suchness, you are also very good, Subhuti! Subhuti, if all the sentient beings in the three thousand great thousand worlds were to attain the path of the ten virtuous actions, the four immeasurables, and the four concentrations, and the four formless absorptions, and the five superknowledges, what do you think, Subhuti? Would they increase a lot through the cause of that merit? Subhuti replied: World Honored One, a lot. Sugata, a lot. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, even more so, any son of good family or daughter of good family whose roots of virtue are dedicated without attachment, their merit increases extremely. Therefore, Subhuti, the dedication of the roots of virtue of that son of good family or daughter of good family is excellent. It is supreme. It is the main. It is श्रेष्ठ (Sanskrit Devanagari: श्रेष्ठ, Sanskrit Romanization: śreṣṭha, Chinese literal meaning: superior). It is अतिश्रेष्ठ (Sanskrit Devanagari: अतिश्रेष्ठ, Sanskrit Romanization: atiśreṣṭha, Chinese literal meaning: extremely superior). It is अतिउत्तम (Sanskrit Devanagari: अतिउत्तम, Sanskrit Romanization: atiuttama, Chinese literal meaning: extremely supreme). It is unsurpassed. It is incomparable, which is a small division of the dedication that produces great merit. Furthermore, Subhuti, in this three thousand great thousand world realm, however many sentient beings there are, all of them become stream-enterers (Sotapanna), once-returners, non-returners, and become Arhats, and to all of them, any son of good family or daughter of good family makes offerings with clothes, alms, bedding, medicine for the cause of illness, and many implements for as long as they live. What do you think, Subhuti? Does the merit of that son of good family or daughter of good family increase a lot through that cause? Subhuti replied: World Honored One, a lot. Sugata, a lot. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, even more so, any son of good family or daughter of good family who dedicates the roots of virtue in that way with dedication without attachment.

that merit would increase even more. Furthermore, Subhuti, in a great trichiliocosm, however many sentient beings there are, if all of them were to become Pratyekabuddhas, and some son or daughter of good family were to attend to those Pratyekabuddhas with robes, alms-food, bedding, medicine for sickness, and many implements, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them, what do you think, Subhuti? Would the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase much on that account? Subhuti said, "Bhagavan, much! Sugata, much!" The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, even more than that, if some son or daughter of good family were to dedicate those roots of virtue in such a way, without attachment, the merit of that dedication would increase even more. This is called the middling dedication that produces great merit. Furthermore, Subhuti, in a great trichiliocosm, however many sentient beings there are, if all of them were to correctly enter unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and then all the sentient beings in world systems to the east, as many as the sands of the Ganga, were to attend to each Bodhisattva-Mahasattva with robes, alms-food, bedding, medicine for sickness, and many implements, for as many eons as there are sands in the Ganga, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them, and serving them with all comforts; and similarly, all the sentient beings in world systems to the south, west, north, intermediate directions, below, and above, as many as the sands of the Ganga, were to attend to each Bodhisattva-Mahasattva with robes, alms-food, bedding, medicine for sickness, and many implements, for as many eons as there are sands in the Ganga, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them, and serving them with all comforts, what do you think, Subhuti?
