I also speak of the merits of the Buddha, I also speak of the merits of the Dharma, I also speak of the merits of the Sangha, and if from those two also arises the sound of an echo, what do you think of that, sons of the gods? Can a single echo know the sound of a second echo? The sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti, that is not possible. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like echoes; in regard to that, no one teaches, no one hears, no one knows. Sons of the gods, for example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician conjures up a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha at a major crossroads, and also conjures up a retinue of four, and then he teaches the Dharma to the conjured retinue of four, what do you think of that, sons of the gods? Is there anyone who teaches, hears, or knows in regard to that? The sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti, that is not possible. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like illusions; in regard to that, no one teaches, no one hears, no one knows. This is called the teaching that does not require teaching by others. Then, those sons of the gods thought thus: Alas! This venerable and noble Subhuti is one who clarifies the Perfection of Wisdom, one who teaches what is more profound than the profound, one who teaches what is more subtle than the subtle. This is called the teaching of profound wisdom. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to those sons of the gods: Sons of the gods, form is not profound, not subtle. Feeling is not, perception is not, formations are not, consciousness is not profound, not subtle. Why is that? Because the nature of form is not profound, not subtle. Not of feeling, not of perception, not of formations, the nature of consciousness is not profound, not subtle. The nature of the eye is not profound, not subtle. Not of the ear, not of the nose, not of the tongue, not of the body, the nature of the mind is not profound, not subtle. The nature of the earth element is not profound, not subtle.

It is not. The element of water is not. The element of fire is not. The element of wind is not. The element of space is not. The nature of the element of consciousness is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of generosity paramita is neither profound nor subtle. Morality paramita is not. Patience paramita is not. Diligence paramita is not. Concentration paramita is not. The nature of wisdom paramita is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of inner emptiness is neither profound nor subtle. Outer emptiness is not. Inner and outer emptiness is not. The nature between the emptiness of the nature of non-things is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of the mindfulnesses is neither profound nor subtle. Likewise, the right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the noble truths, the superknowledges, the four immeasurables, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four individual perfect knowledges, the nature of the eighteen unmixed dharmas of the Buddha is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of all the gates of samadhi and dharani is neither profound nor subtle. Even the nature of all-knowingness is neither profound nor subtle. Why is that? Thus, the nature of all-knowingness is neither profound nor subtle. Then, those sons of the gods thought to themselves: In this teaching of the Dharma, there is no imputation of form. There is no feeling. There is no perception. There are no formations. There is no imputation of consciousness. There is no sense base. There is no element. There is no imputation of dependent origination. There is no imputation of paramita. There is no imputation of the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment.

And, emptiness is nowhere to be found. Samadhi is nowhere to be found. The door of Dharani is nowhere to be found. The powers of the Tathagata are nowhere to be found. Fearlessness is nowhere to be found. Separate correct knowledge is nowhere to be found. The eighteen unmixed dharmas of the Buddha are nowhere to be found. In this teaching of the Dharma, there is no establishment of the fruit of stream-entry. There is no once-returner fruit, and no non-returner fruit. There is no Arhatship. There are no self-awakened Bodhisattvas. There is no establishment as Bodhi. There is no establishment as letters, so it is thought. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to those gods: Gods, it is so, it is so. It is so, it is so. The Bodhi of the Tathagata is unspeakable. Unspeakable. It is not shown by anyone. No one has heard it. No one knows it. Gods, therefore, if one wishes to abide in the fruit of stream-entry, and also wishes to realize the fruit of stream-entry, one should not take this forbearance as an object of focus. If there is a once-returner fruit, and a non-returner fruit, and Arhatship, and one who wishes to abide in self-Bodhi, and one who wishes to attain self-Bodhi, one should not take this forbearance as an object of focus. Gods, thus, from the time a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the first thought, from speech and non-simultaneity, one should abide in the Prajnaparamita, which is to show the abandonment of the conceptualizations taken by the solitary Buddhas. Then, those gods thought: What kind of aspect should be sought for listening to the Dharma from the venerable Subhuti? Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the manner of the thoughts of those gods with his mind, said to those gods: Gods, listening to the Dharma from me is like an illusion. Gods, listening to the Dharma from me should be sought as an emanation. Therefore, there is nothing to be heard and nothing to be realized. Then, those gods and the venerable
