If giving is done in that way, it only becomes giving, not the perfection of giving. This is discipline. 'I am endowed with discipline. I shall protect these beings,' if one thinks like that, it only becomes discipline, not the perfection of discipline. 'I am practicing patience. This is patience. I shall be patient with others,' if one thinks like that, it only becomes patience, not the perfection of patience. 'I am exerting effort. This is effort. For the sake of these,' if one thinks like that, it only becomes effort, not the perfection of effort. 'I am entering into meditative concentration. This is meditative concentration. I shall abide in this,' if one thinks like that, it only becomes meditative concentration, not the perfection of meditative concentration. 'I am cultivating wisdom. This is wisdom. For the sake of these,' if one thinks like that, it only becomes wisdom, not the perfection of wisdom. Kausika, a son or daughter of good family, by engaging in such attachment, does not perfect the perfection of giving, nor does one perfect the perfection of discipline, the perfection of patience, the perfection of effort, the perfection of meditative concentration, and the perfection of wisdom. Indra asked: Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva act in order to perfect the perfection of giving? How does one perfect the perfection of discipline? How does one perfect the perfection of patience? How does one perfect the perfection of effort? How does one perfect the perfection of meditative concentration? How does one perfect the perfection of wisdom? The Blessed One replied: Kausika, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives, he does not fixate on the act of giving, he does not fixate on the gift, and he does not fixate on the recipient. This is the perfection of giving.

It is called pāramitā. Not fixating on discipline, not fixating on those who possess discipline, not fixating on sentient beings, this is called the perfection of discipline. Not fixating on patience, not fixating on the object of patience, not fixating on the patient one, this is called the perfection of patience. Not fixating on diligence, not fixating on the object of diligence, not fixating on body and mind, this is called the perfection of diligence. Not fixating on meditation, not fixating on meditating, not fixating on the object of meditation, this is called the perfection of meditation. Not fixating on wisdom, not fixating on those who possess wisdom, not fixating on sentient beings, this is called the perfection of wisdom. Kauśika, a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva who practices in this way will perfect the perfection of generosity, will perfect the perfection of discipline, will perfect the perfection of patience, will perfect the perfection of diligence, will perfect the perfection of meditation, will perfect the perfection of wisdom. Kauśika, a son or daughter of good family should explain this perfection of wisdom, which is meaningful and literal, in this way of non-fixation. Similarly, one should speak of the perfection of meditation, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of patience, the perfection of discipline, and the perfection of generosity, which are meaningful and literal. Why is that? Kauśika, in the future, because there will be those sons or daughters of good family who show the image of the perfection of wisdom, therefore, whichever son or daughter of good family has entered into unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, having heard that image of the perfection of wisdom, will feel it is a waste. Therefore, one should also explain to them this perfection of wisdom, which is meaningful and literal. Indra asked: Blessed One, the wisdom of

What is the image of the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Kauśika, here, a son or daughter of good family thinks that this is the teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom, and shows the image of the Perfection of Wisdom. Then, this is the image of the Perfection of Wisdom: it will show that form is impermanent. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness will also be shown to be impermanent, and whoever acts in this way is acting in the Perfection of Wisdom, and will be shown to sons or daughters of good family, and they will also show that form is impermanent.
