and also does not contradict, and also shows the nature of reality. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does this venerable Subhūti not contradict designation and also show the nature of reality?" The Blessed One replied: "Kauśika, form is merely a designation. Whatever is merely a designation, that is the nature of reality. That is what the venerable Subhūti has shown without contradiction. Kauśika, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are merely designations. Whatever is merely a designation, that is the nature of reality. That is what the venerable Subhūti has shown without contradiction. Kauśika, why is that? Whatever is the nature of reality of all phenomena, that is non-contradictory, completely non-contradictory.

Thus it was taught. Kauśika, similarly, a once-returner, a non-returner, an Arhat, a Pratyekabuddha, and a Tathāgata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha, are merely designations. Whatever is merely a designation, that is the nature of phenomena. This was taught by the venerable Subhūti as non-contradictory. Kauśika, why is that? Because the nature of phenomena is non-contradictory. Whatever is non-contradictory, that has been taught by the venerable Subhūti as without contradiction. Kauśika, in that way, the venerable Subhūti does not contradict designations and also teaches the nature of phenomena. Subhūti said: Kauśika, it is just so, it is just so. Thus, the Blessed One has also taught that all phenomena are merely designations. Kauśika, a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva should also, in that way, realize that all phenomena are merely designations and thereby train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Kauśika, a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, training in that way, does not train in form, does not train in feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. Why is that? Because, in this way, he does not truly see the form that should be trained in. Similarly, he does not truly see the feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness that should be trained in. A Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, training in that way, does not train in the Perfection of Generosity. Why is that? Because, in this way, he does not truly see the Perfection of Generosity that should be trained in. Similarly, he does not train in the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Because, in this way, he does not truly see the Perfection of Wisdom that should be trained in. He does not train in inner emptiness, up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things. Why is that? Because, in this way, he does not truly see the inner emptiness that should be trained in, and non-things.

Because they do not truly see the nature of form up to emptiness. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva trains in this way, they do not train in the four mindfulnesses. Why is that? Because they do not truly see the mindfulnesses that should be trained in. Similarly, they do not train in the right abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the immeasurables, the meditations, the formless absorptions, the superknowledges, the truths, the powers, the fearlessnesses, the separate correct knowledges, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas. They do not train in the fruit of stream-enterer, the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, the state of Arhat, or self-enlightenment. They do not train in all-knowingness. Why is that? Because they do not truly see the all-knowingness that should be trained in. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, said to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not truly see form, and does not truly see feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. Similarly, they do not truly see the separate and aggregated aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, or the perfections, they do not truly see all emptinesses, and they do not truly see the qualities of the side of enlightenment. They do not truly see the immeasurables, meditations, and formless absorptions. They do not truly see the truths that should be trained in, they do not truly see the superknowledges, they do not truly see the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the separate correct knowledges, and they do not truly see the eighteen unmixed qualities of the Buddhas, up to all-knowingness. Subhuti said: Kauśika, thus form is empty of form.
