One does not become arrogant about what is, and also cultivates the mind to be completely pure, and does not truly see that ground either. What is the complete purification of the ground of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the first ground should practice these ten purifications. What are the ten? That is, purifying the superior intention by way of non-objectification, and purifying beneficial things because of non-objectification of characteristics, and purifying equanimity towards all sentient beings because of non-objectification of sentient beings, and purifying giving because of non-objectification of giving, bestowing, and receiving, and purifying reliance on a virtuous friend because of not being arrogant about it, and purifying the search for Dharma because of non-objectification of all dharmas, and purifying repeated arising because of non-objectification of household, and purifying desire for the body of the Buddha because of non-objectification of the marks of good signs and characteristics, and purifying the explanation of Dharma because of non-objectification of the distinctions of Dharma, and purifying the elimination of pride and arrogance because of non-objectification of the existence of Dharma, and purifying truthful words because of non-objectification of words. Subhuti, these ten purifications are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the first ground should do. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the second ground should repeatedly attend to and diligently practice these eight dharmas. What are the eight? Namely: completely pure morality, knowing what has been done and feeling what has been done, abiding in the power of patience, having experienced great joy, completely not abandoning all sentient beings, manifesting great compassion, reverently serving the lama with faith, respectfully praising with the perception of a teacher, and diligently seeking the perfections. Subhuti, these eight dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the second ground should repeatedly attend to and diligently practice. Furthermore, Subhuti,

I, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the third ground, should abide in five dharmas. What are the five? Namely: Thus, one is not satiated with much learning and does not cling to letters; one distinguishes the giving of Dharma without impurity and does not become arrogant thereby; one generates roots of virtue for purifying the Buddha-fields and does not become arrogant even when dedicating them; one is not wearied by immeasurable samsara and does not become arrogant thereby; one abides in knowing shame and having scruples, and does not become arrogant thereby. Subhuti, these five dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the third ground should abide in. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the fourth ground should fully take up and abide in these ten dharmas, and should not abandon them. What are the ten? Namely: Thus, abiding in solitude; having few desires; being content; not abandoning the qualities of learning and the necessary implements; not abandoning the precepts; reviling the qualities of desire; generating a mind combined with nirvana; completely giving away all possessions; not being disheartened; not depending on any objects. Subhuti, these ten dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the fourth ground should not abandon, but should properly take up and abide in. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the fifth ground should abandon these ten dharmas. What are the ten? Namely: Thus, one should abandon associating with householders and renunciates; one should abandon stinginess towards one's retinue; one should abandon places of commotion; one should abandon harmful thoughts; one should abandon praising oneself; one should abandon disparaging others. One should abandon the ten paths of non-virtue. One should abandon excessive pride, arrogance, perverted views, doubt, desire, hatred, and delusion, and remain in tranquility. These ten dharmas are what a Bodhi-
