The four foundations of mindfulness, the five roots, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, these are called uncontaminated dharmas. Conditioned Dharmas. Question: World-Honored One, what are conditioned dharmas? The World-Honored One said: Subhuti, what are called conditioned dharmas are the desire realm, the form realm, the formless realm, and any other dharmas that exist apart from the three realms, as well as the thirty-seven wings of enlightenment, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, these are called conditioned dharmas. Unconditioned Dharmas. Question: World-Honored One, what are unconditioned dharmas? The World-Honored One said: Subhuti, whatever is without arising and without ceasing, and where change from abiding is not apparent, such as the exhaustion of desire, the exhaustion of hatred, the exhaustion of delusion, suchness that is not mistaken, suchness that is not other, the nature of dharma, the sphere of dharma, the abiding nature of dharma, the determined nature of dharma, the inconceivable sphere, and the limit of reality, Subhuti, these are called unconditioned dharmas. Common Dharmas. Question: World-Honored One, what are common dharmas? The World-Honored One said: Subhuti, the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, and the five supernormal cognitions, these are called common dharmas with ordinary beings. Uncommon Dharmas. Question: World-Honored One, what are uncommon dharmas? The World-Honored One said: Subhuti, the thirty-seven wings of enlightenment, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, these are called uncommon dharmas. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, then...

Because there is no obstruction and no discrimination, one should not be attached to all dharmas that are empty of their own nature. One should realize that all dharmas are of a non-dual nature. This is the instruction on the object of practice. The purpose of practice. Great Mind. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is meant by the term 'Bodhisattva Mahasattva'? Blessed One, why is one called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, in this case, one will become the supreme of a great mass of beings and a great assembly of beings, therefore one is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva." He asked: "Blessed One, of whom will the Bodhisattva Mahasattva become the supreme? What are the great mass of beings and the great assembly of beings?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, the great mass of beings and the great assembly of beings are as follows: those on the lineage ground, the eighth stage, the stream-enterer, the once-returner, the non-returner, the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, the Bodhisattva who has generated the mind, and even the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides on the irreversible ground. Subhuti, this is called the great mass of beings and the great assembly of beings, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will become the supreme of these. In this case, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the vajra-like mind. One will become the supreme of the great mass of beings and the great assembly of beings." He asked: "Blessed One, what is the vajra-like mind generation?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, in this case, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva thinks thus: 'In countless cycles of existence, for the benefit of all sentient beings, I have donned armor and completely given away all possessions. I shall generate equanimity towards all sentient beings. I shall completely liberate all sentient beings from suffering through the three vehicles.'

O! Although I lead all sentient beings to complete nirvana, in reality, not a single sentient being is truly liberated from suffering. What is the reason for this? It is because I must realize that all dharmas are unborn. I should practice the six paramitas with a mind unmingled with the knowledge of all aspects. I should study all the subsequent realizations of all dharmas. I should realize the single nature of all dharmas as one taste. I should study the dharmas for the sake of realizing the actualization of the paramitas. I should study the dharmas for the sake of realizing the actualization of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. I should study the dharmas for the sake of realizing the actualization of dhyana, immeasurables, formless absorptions, and supernormal knowledges. I should study the dharmas for the sake of realizing the actualization of the ten powers, four fearlessnesses, four analytical knowledges, and eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. Thus, generate the mind. Subhuti, it is from dwelling in this that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas generate a vajra-like mind, acting without perceiving the great assembly of sentient beings, the supreme of the great class of sentient beings. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks thus: "For as many sentient beings as there are in the hells, in the realm of animals, and in the world of Yama, who are experiencing suffering, for the sake of those beings, I shall experience that suffering." Here, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should generate the mind thus: "For as long as those sentient beings have not attained complete nirvana without remainder, for the sake of each and every sentient being, I shall, for countless hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas, until they have attained nirvana in the realm without remainder, (bear the suffering of) sentient beings in hell, sentient beings in the animal realm, and sentient beings in the world of Yama.
