Mindfulness, clear comprehension, appropriate attention, and the eight liberations. What are the eight liberations? One who has form contemplates forms; this is the first liberation. One who has no perception of inner form contemplates outer forms; this is the second liberation. One is intent on what is beautiful; this is the third liberation. By completely transcending perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking, 'Space is infinite,' one dwells in the sphere of infinite space; this is the fourth liberation. By completely transcending the sphere of infinite space, thinking, 'Consciousness is infinite,' one dwells in the sphere of infinite consciousness; this is the fifth liberation. By completely transcending the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking, 'There is nothing at all,' one dwells in the sphere of nothingness; this is the sixth liberation. By completely transcending the sphere of nothingness, one dwells in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception; this is the seventh liberation. By completely transcending the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one dwells having attained the cessation of perception and feeling; this is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations. There are nine successive abidings in meditative absorption. What are the nine? It is like this: secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome qualities, with initial application and sustained application, filled with the joy and pleasure born of seclusion, one dwells having attained the first dhyana. With the subsiding of initial application and sustained application, with inner tranquility and unification of mind, without initial application and sustained application, filled with the joy and pleasure born of concentration, one dwells having attained the second dhyana. With dispassion for joy, one dwells in equanimity, mindful and clearly comprehending, experiencing pleasure with the body, of which the noble ones declare, 'Dwelling in equanimity, mindful, one dwells pleasantly,' one dwells having attained the third dhyana.

And abiding, having accomplished the third dhyana, which is without the joy of expression; and having abandoned that pleasure and also abandoned suffering, and since joy and displeasure have previously ceased, there is neither pleasure nor suffering, and abiding, having accomplished the fourth dhyana, which is equanimity and pure mindfulness. And completely transcending all perceptions of form, since perceptions of resistance have ceased and not attending to various perceptions, thinking 'space is infinite,' abiding, having accomplished the sphere of infinite space.
