He attends to what is called "interval." He attends to the emptiness of internal phenomena in aging and death, actions, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, and birth. He attends to the emptiness of external phenomena in aging and death. He attends to the emptiness of internal and external phenomena in aging and death. He attends to the emptiness of the nature of non-things in aging and death, and also focuses on the emptiness of the internal, and through the manner of focusing, he becomes arrogant through that emptiness. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a bodhisattva mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he cultivates the mindfulnesses without being separated from the attention endowed with all aspects of knowledge, and he also focuses on those mindfulnesses, and through the manner of focusing, he becomes arrogant through those mindfulnesses. Similarly, he cultivates the correct abandonments, the legs of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the path, the meditative stabilizations, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the superknowledges, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four specific correct knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddhas, and he also focuses on those qualities of the Buddhas, and through the manner of focusing, he becomes arrogant through those qualities of the Buddhas. Subhuti, when a bodhisattva mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, because he is unskilled in means, after hearing this teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom, he becomes frightened and completely terrified, and is seized by fear. Subhuti asked, "Bhagavan, who is seized by evil friends and, after hearing the teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom, becomes frightened and completely terrified, and is seized by fear? How does a bodhisattva mahasattva become seized by evil friends?" The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, here, the evil friend of a bodhisattva mahasattva is one who causes him to be separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and from meditative stabilization.
