The conceptualization established on the path of the existent is the dualistic conceptualization of grasping. Completely grasping is the first; completely seizing through skillful means. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva newly entered into the Great Vehicle hears this teaching, will he not be discouraged, utterly discouraged, and regretful? Will he not be afraid, utterly terrified, and seized by utter terror?" The Blessed One replied: "Sariputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva newly entered into the Great Vehicle engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, and is unskilled in means, and has not fallen into the hands of a virtuous friend, then he will be discouraged, utterly terrified, and seized by terror." Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, by engaging in what does one not fear, not be utterly terrified, and not be seized by utter terror? What is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who engages in the Perfection of Wisdom?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, with a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he individually examines form as impermanent, but does not fixate on it. With a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he individually examines feeling as impermanent, but does not fixate on it. With a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he individually examines perception as impermanent, but does not fixate on it. With a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he individually examines formations as impermanent, but does not fixate on it. With a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he individually examines consciousness as impermanent, but does not fixate on it. Subhuti, this should be known as the skillful means of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who engages in the Perfection of Wisdom. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, individually examines form as suffering, but does not fixate on it. With a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he examines feeling and perception.

And consciousness, and formations, and consciousness, although individually contemplating them as suffering, that is not perceived. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, with a mind endowed with the very knowledge of all aspects, contemplates form as empty. Form is selfless, form is peaceful, form is secluded, form is empty, form is signless, form is wishless, yet that is not perceived. Hearing, and the mental engagement associated with Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, or that which is not interrupted by other non-virtuous dharmas, this is the perfection of meditative concentration of a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva. Subhūti, thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, he is not alarmed, not utterly terrified, and will not be overcome by terror. End of the twelfth chapter. Furthermore, Subhūti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, he thoroughly contemplates in this way with a mental engagement endowed with the knowledge of all aspects: The emptiness of form is not that form is empty, but form itself is emptiness. Emptiness itself is form. The emptiness of feeling is not that feeling is empty, but feeling itself is emptiness. Emptiness itself is feeling.
