In order not to do, one should cultivate relying on virtuous friends; in order not to be attached to all dharmas, one should cultivate seeking the Dharma; in order not to be attached to home, one should cultivate appearing again and again; in order not to be attached to the signs of excellent marks and features, one should cultivate desiring the body of the Buddha; in order not to be attached to the distinctions of dharmas, one should cultivate explaining the Dharma in detail; in order not to be attached to the very existence of dharmas, one should cultivate eliminating the pride of arrogance; in order not to be attached to words, one should cultivate truthful speech. Subhuti, these ten cultivations are the activities of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the first ground. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the second ground should repeatedly contemplate these eight dharmas and diligently apply himself to them. What are the eight? They are as follows: completely pure morality; knowing what has been done and being aware of what has been done; abiding in the power of patience; having experienced great joy; never abandoning all sentient beings; manifesting great compassion; serving and honoring the lama with faith, and respectfully relying on him with the perception of the teacher as the Buddha; and diligently seeking the perfections. Subhuti, these eight dharmas are what a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the second ground should repeatedly contemplate and diligently apply himself to. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the third ground should abide in five dharmas. What are the five? They are as follows: never being satisfied with much learning, and also not being particularly attached to the letters; distinguishing the giving of the Dharma without contamination, and also not becoming arrogant because of it; generating roots of virtue in order to purify the Buddha-field completely, and even when dedicating them, not becoming arrogant because of it; never being weary of countless cycles of existence, and also not becoming arrogant because of it; abiding in knowing shame and having a sense of honor, and also not becoming arrogant because of it. Subhuti, these five dharmas are what a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the third ground
