To serve with respect, to rely on with reverence with the thought of a teacher, and to diligently seek the perfections. Subhuti, these eight dharmas are what a bodhisattva-mahasattva abiding on the second ground should repeatedly contemplate and diligently practice. Subhuti, furthermore, a bodhisattva-mahasattva abiding on the third ground should abide in five dharmas. What are the five? Namely: Thus, one is never satisfied with much learning and does not cling to letters; one discerns the giving of dharma without defilement and does not become arrogant thereby; one generates roots of virtue for purifying the Buddha-fields and does not become arrogant even when dedicating them; one is not weary of immeasurable samsara and does not become arrogant thereby; one abides in knowing shame and having scruples and does not become arrogant thereby. Subhuti, these five dharmas are what a bodhisattva-mahasattva abiding on the third ground should abide in. Subhuti, furthermore, a bodhisattva-mahasattva abiding on the fourth ground should take up and abide in these ten dharmas and should not abandon them. What are the ten? Namely: Thus, abiding in solitary places, having few desires, being content, not abandoning the qualities of discipline and the diminished requisites, not abandoning the trainings, denouncing the qualities of desire, generating a mind conjoined with nirvana, completely giving away all possessions, being without timidity, and being without dependence on all things. Subhuti, these ten dharmas are what a bodhisattva-mahasattva abiding on the fourth ground should not abandon, but should truly take up and abide in.
