Where does this reside? Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas act in a way that does not cling to the great assembly of beings and the excellence of the great division of beings, it is the diamond-like generation of the mind. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the mind with this thought: "For the sake of as many beings as there are who fall into hell, who are born as animals, and who are in the realm of Yama, who will experience the feeling of suffering, I will experience that feeling of suffering for their benefit." The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should generate the mind in this way: "Thus, for as long as those beings do not completely pass into nirvana without any remainder, I will also, for the benefit of each being, experience the suffering of hell beings, the place of birth of animals, and the realm of Yama for many hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, until they pass into nirvana in the realm without any remainder." In this way, until all beings completely pass into nirvana in the realm of complete nirvana without any remainder, for the benefit of all beings, I will experience all the suffering of hell beings and so forth. Then, I will first plant the roots of virtue for my own benefit, and after accumulating the accumulations of enlightenment for many hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, I will then manifest complete enlightenment into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. One should generate the mind in this way. Subhuti, this is the diamond-like generation of the mind that acts in a way that does not cling to the great assembly of beings and the excellence of the great division of beings. Furthermore, Subhuti, the generation of the mind of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, in what way should it become the excellence of all beings, that is, it should become a great mind. The great mind of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is this: from the moment of first generating the mind, one does not generate a mind of desire, one does not generate a mind of hatred, one does not generate a mind of delusion, one does not generate a mind of affection.

Yes, it is that which does not generate the mind of a Hearer or the mind of a Solitary Buddha. Subhuti, this is the great mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who, by whatever means he becomes the most excellent of all sentient beings, does not become conceited thereby. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should possess an unmoving mind. In this regard, the unmoving mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is this: He keeps in mind that he possesses all-aspects of knowledge, but he does not become conceited thereby. Subhuti, this is the unmoving mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva by which he becomes the most excellent of all sentient beings. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should generate a mind of benefit and happiness for all sentient beings. In this regard, the mind of benefit and happiness of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is this: He protects all sentient beings and does not abandon all sentient beings, but he does not become conceited thereby. Subhuti, this is the mind of benefit and happiness of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who, abiding in whatever place, will become the most excellent of a great assembly of sentient beings and a great multitude of sentient beings in a non-apprehending manner. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should strive in the yoga of delight in the Dharma and great delight in the Dharma. In this regard, what is the Dharma? It is that all Dharmas are without distinction; this is called the Dharma. In this regard, what is delight in the Dharma? It is manifest delight in the Dharma; this is called delight in the Dharma. In this regard, what is great delight in the Dharma? It is meditating on the Dharma and making it abundant; this is called great delight in the Dharma. In this regard, what is striving in the yoga of delight in the Dharma and great delight in the Dharma? It is manifest practice; this is called striving in the yoga of delight in the Dharma and great delight in the Dharma. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, by practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, becomes the most excellent of a great mass of sentient beings and a great multitude of sentient beings, but he does not apprehend it.
