This is the seventh liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and having attained and abided in the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations. The nine successive abidings in meditative absorption. What are the nine? They are as follows: Secluded from desire, secluded from evil and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, with joy and pleasure, having attained and abided in the first dhyana. Thereafter, with the cessation of initial application and sustained application, with inner serenity, the mind becoming unified, without initial application, without sustained application, born of concentration, with joy and pleasure, having attained and abided in the second dhyana. Thereafter, being detached from joy, abiding in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones describe it as "mindful, experiencing pleasure, abiding in equanimity," having attained and abided in the third dhyana, which is without joy. Thereafter, having abandoned pleasure and having abandoned suffering, with the previous mental pleasure and displeasure having ceased, being neither with pleasure nor with suffering, having attained and abided in the fourth dhyana, which is the complete purity of equanimity and mindfulness. Thereafter, having completely transcended all perceptions of form, with the perceptions of resistance having ceased, not attending to various perceptions, thinking "space is infinite," having attained and abided in the sphere of infinite space. Thereafter, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking "consciousness is infinite," having attained and abided in the sphere of infinite consciousness. Thereafter, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking "there is nothing at all," having attained and abided in the sphere of nothingness. Thereafter, having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, having attained and abided in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception.
