That which is called "following" refers to its fourth kind of discrimination, which is the discrimination of clinging to the two extremes. These are not known or seen due to ignorance and craving. What is not known or seen? That is, not knowing or seeing that form is completely defiled. Similarly, not knowing or seeing that form is completely purified. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are completely defiled, and this is not known or seen. Similarly, consciousness is completely purified, and this is not known or seen. Those are definitely not going to emerge. From where are they definitely not going to emerge? That is, they are definitely not going to emerge from the desire realm. They are definitely not going to emerge from the form realm. They are definitely not going to emerge from the formless realm. They are definitely not going to emerge from the teachings of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, which is called its fifth kind of discrimination, the discrimination of not knowing complete defilement and complete purification. Those are without faith. How are they without faith? That is, they do not have faith that form is empty of form. Until enlightenment, they do not have faith that enlightenment is empty of enlightenment. Those are not abiding. How are they not abiding? That is, they do not abide in the perfection of generosity. They do not abide in the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, and the perfection of meditation. They do not abide in the perfection of wisdom. They do not abide in the irreversible ground. They do not abide among the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas. Those are manifestly attached. How are they manifestly attached? That is, they are manifestly attached to form. They are manifestly attached to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. They are manifestly attached to the eye. They are manifestly attached to the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. They are manifestly attached to the sources, elements, and dependent origination. They are manifestly attached to desire, hatred, and delusion. They are manifestly attached to those that have become views. Until enlightenment, manifestly

It is attachment, therefore it is called a child. Question: World Honored One, do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who study in this way not study the Perfection of Wisdom and not attain all-knowingness? The World Honored One said: Shariputra, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who study in this way do not study the Perfection of Wisdom. They will not attain all-knowingness. Question: World Honored One, for what reason? Bodhisattvas do not study the Perfection of Wisdom. They will not attain all-knowingness? The World Honored One said: Shariputra, here, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, because they are not skilled in means, discriminate against the Perfection of Wisdom. They are attached to it. They discriminate against the Perfection of Dhyana. They are attached to it. They discriminate against the Perfection of Diligence. They are attached to it. They discriminate against the Perfection of Patience. They are attached to it. They discriminate against the Perfection of Morality. They are attached to it. They discriminate against the Perfection of Generosity. They are attached to it. Similarly, they discriminate against the samadhi of dhyana, immeasurable states, and formless absorptions. They are attached to it. They discriminate against mindfulness, right exertion, miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the path. They are attached to it. They discriminate against the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha. They are attached to it, and even discriminate between all dharmas and all-knowingness. They are attached to it. Shariputra, for these reasons, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas do not study the Perfection of Wisdom. They will not attain all-knowingness, which is called the sixth discrimination against the noble path, that is, the discrimination of not abiding in the noble path. Question: World Honored One, Bo

How does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva learn so that he will definitely arise in omniscience? How does one study the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he learns in such a way that he does not fixate on the Perfection of Wisdom and does not truly see it, then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will definitely arise in omniscience in a non-fixating manner. Similarly, one does not fixate on the Perfection of Meditation, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Generosity, and even omniscience. One does not truly see them. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva learns the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, then he will definitely arise in omniscience in a non-fixating manner. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way and learns the Perfection of Wisdom in this way will arise in omniscience in a non-fixating manner. This is the seventh distinction, which is the distinction of the object of focus. Shariputra asked: Blessed One, what is the non-fixating manner in which omniscience arises? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, because it is utterly pure, one does not fixate on or see self. Similarly, because it is utterly pure, one does not fixate on or see even omniscience. This is the eighth distinction, which is the distinction of self and others. Shariputra, purity is unborn, unarisen, and unmanifest. This is the ninth distinction, which is the distinction of the states of purity such as birth. These are the first distinctions of the apprehended. The second distinction of the apprehended: nine distinctions belonging to the peak. Because of unskilled means, one fixates on form and manifests attachment.
