Because of purity, the desire realm is not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the form realm is not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the formless realm is not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the meditations, the immeasurables, and the formless attainments are not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the mindfulness, the correct abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the path are not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the perfections are not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the four specific correct knowledges, and the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One are not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the unmixed qualities of the Buddha are not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the stream-enterer is not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the once-returner, the non-returner, the arhat, and the solitary buddha are not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the bodhisattva is not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, enlightenment is not apprehended. Because of extreme purity, the Buddha is not apprehended. Asked: World-honored One, what is purity? The World-honored One said: All phenomena are unborn, unarisen, without object, and without manifestation; this is called purity. Shariputra, in this way, the bodhisattva mahasattva learns by not apprehending all phenomena, which is taught in a general way in relation to conceptualization. Asked: World-honored One, what phenomena does the bodhisattva mahasattva who learns in this way learn? The World-honored One said: Shariputra, the bodhisattva mahasattva who learns in this way does not learn any phenomena. Why? Shariputra, these phenomena do not have the appearance of how childish ordinary beings manifestly cling to them. Asked: World-honored One, then what is the appearance of these phenomena? The World-honored One said: Shariputra, these phenomena have no appearance whatsoever; because they have no appearance, they are not apprehended. Asked: World-honored One, how does a bodhisattva mahasattva act so as to act without apprehension, and how does he act so as to act without apprehension? The World-honored One said: Shariputra, when a bodhisattva mahasattva does not apprehend form, that is acting without apprehension. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the eye, that is acting without apprehension. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend form, that is acting without apprehension. Sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the eye element, that is acting without apprehension. The mind element, the phenomena element, and the mind-consciousness element are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend ignorance, that is acting without apprehension. Formation, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, old age, and death are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the desire realm, that is acting without apprehension. The form realm and the formless realm are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend meditation, that is acting without apprehension. The immeasurables and the formless attainments are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend mindfulness, that is acting without apprehension. The correct abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the path are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the perfections, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the ten powers, that is acting without apprehension. The four fearlessnesses, the four specific correct knowledges, and the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the unmixed qualities of the Buddha, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the stream-enterer, that is acting without apprehension. The once-returner, the non-returner, the arhat, and the solitary buddha are not apprehended, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the bodhisattva, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend enlightenment, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, when one does not apprehend the Buddha, that is acting without apprehension. Shariputra, acting in this way, the bodhisattva mahasattva is acting without apprehension.

Commentary: How is it said to exist in this way, and why is it said to be non-existent because it does not exist in this way? This is the first ignorance-related concept that belongs to the category of warmth and is associated with conceptualization. Question: Blessed One, why is it said to be "not existent" instead of "non-existent"? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, form is not existent because of the space between inner emptiness and the emptiness of the nature of non-things. Feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are not existent because of the space between inner emptiness and the emptiness of the nature of non-things. The aspects of enlightenment are not existent because of the space between inner emptiness and the emptiness of the nature of non-things. The eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are not existent because of the space between inner emptiness and the emptiness of the nature of non-things. This is the second concept, the concept of the aggregates such as form. In this regard, ordinary beings are manifestly attached to ignorance and craving. They are measured by ignorance and craving. Having measured, they are manifestly attached by ignorance and craving, and because they cling to the two extremes, they do not truly know or see the two extremes as they are. Having measured these untrue phenomena, from manifest attachment to name and form, up to the phenomena of the Buddhas, they become manifestly attached. This is the third concept, the concept of manifest attachment to name and form. Those who are manifestly attached to phenomena conceptualize in the two extremes of non-existence. Having conceptualized, they do not know or see. What do they not know or see? They do not know or see form. They do not know or see feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, up to the sense bases, realms, and dependent origination. They do not know or see the thirty-seven aspects of enlightenment, up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. Thus, they are called ordinary beings.
