Gawo rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, bowed towards where the Blessed One was. He then addressed the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, do not smile without cause or reason. What is the cause of your smile? What is the reason?" The Blessed One replied: "Ananda, in this assembly, hundreds of millions of beings have attained the patience of non-arising dharma. In the future, after sixty-eight kotis of kalpas, in a kalpa called 'Flower Origin,' the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, named 'Flower of Enlightenment,' will appear in the world. This is the instruction on the six superknowledges." The instruction on the path of seeing. Then, at that time, the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Subhuti, saying: "Subhuti, you should speak about the Prajnaparamita for the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, so that the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will definitely arise from the Prajnaparamita. Then, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, the great Shravakas, and the sons of the gods thought: 'Does the Venerable Subhuti now explain the Prajnaparamita to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas by the power of his own wisdom and eloquence, or does he explain it by the power of the Buddha?' Afterwards, the Venerable Subhuti, by the power of the Buddha, knew the various thoughts in the minds of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, the great Shravakas, and the sons of the gods, and then said to the Venerable Shariputra: 'Venerable Shariputra, whatever the Shravakas of the Blessed One slightly explain, teach, or closely show, all should be known as the power of the Tathagata. Why is that? Thus, the Dharma taught by the Tathagata, the Shravakas of the Blessed One...'

Because it has been taught, the nature of reality is made manifest. Having made the nature of reality manifest, whatever is explained, shown, or closely shown, all of that is not contrary to the nature of reality. Shariputra, this is how the Tathagata teaches the Prajnaparamita to the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas through skillful means. Shariputra, this teaching of the Prajnaparamita to the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is not the realm of the Shravakas and all the Pratyekabuddhas. This is a close exposition of the instruction on the path of seeing. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, you say Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva. Bhagavan, what dharma is this term for? For example, it is called Bodhisattva. Bhagavan, I have not truly seen that dharma, for example, it is called Bodhisattva." "Bhagavan, since I have not truly seen a Bodhisattva, nor do I see Prajnaparamita, to which Bodhisattva should I instruct and show which Prajnaparamita?" After he said this, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, this is just a name, for example, it is called Bodhisattva and Prajnaparamita. That name of Bodhisattva is not inside, nor is it outside, nor is it seen apart from both. Subhuti, for example, beings are called beings, but no being is seen. Whatever its name is, that is merely an imputation, an imputed dharma, something that exists by imputation. This is the acceptance of knowing the dharma in suffering. That imputation is only a convention of names, and apart from that, there is no arising and no cessation. Similarly, self, life, nourishment, person, individual, born of power, son of power, doer, feeler, knower, seer, all of these are imputed dharmas.

All of these are from non-arising and non-ceasing to being expressed by names. Subhuti, likewise, whatever is the Perfection of Wisdom, whatever is a Bodhisattva, and whatever is the name of a Bodhisattva, all of these are imputed dharmas. All of these are from non-arising and non-ceasing to being expressed by mere names. Subhuti, for example, the so-called internal form is merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by a sign of a name, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. Subhuti, the so-called feeling is merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by a mere sign of a name, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. Subhuti, the so-called perception is merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by a sign of a name, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. Subhuti, the so-called formations are merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by a sign of a name, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. Subhuti, the so-called consciousness is merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by a sign of a name, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. Subhuti, likewise, the Perfection of Wisdom, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva, all of these are merely imputed dharmas. For those imputed dharmas, it is only expressed by a sign of a name, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. Subhuti, the so-called eye is merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by an imputed sign of a name, for example, the so-called eye, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. The eye is neither internal nor external, and cannot be found apart from the two. Subhuti, the so-called ear is merely an imputation of dharma. For that imputed dharma, it is only expressed by a sign of a name, for example, the so-called ear, but in reality, it is non-arising and non-ceasing. The ear is neither internal nor exter
