Furthermore, Shariputra, because there is no Buddha, a bodhisattva does not focus on the prior extreme. Because the Buddha is emptiness, peacefulness, and without intrinsic nature, a bodhisattva does not focus on the prior extreme. Because there is no Buddha, a bodhisattva does not focus on the posterior extreme. Because the Buddha is emptiness, peacefulness, and without intrinsic nature, a bodhisattva does not focus on the posterior extreme. Because there is no Buddha, a bodhisattva does not focus on the middle. Because the Buddha is emptiness, peacefulness, and without intrinsic nature, a bodhisattva does not focus on the middle. Why is that? Shariputra, from the absence of a Shravaka, emptiness, peacefulness, and absence of intrinsic nature up to the state of omniscience, there is no absence, emptiness, peacefulness, or absence of intrinsic nature upon which to focus as the prior extreme, the posterior extreme, or the middle. Shariputra, absence is not other, emptiness is not other, peacefulness is not other, absence of intrinsic nature is not other, a Shravaka is not other, a Pratyekabuddha is not other, a Bodhisattva is not other, the state of omniscience is not other, the prior extreme, the posterior extreme, and the middle are not other. Shariputra, in that way, whatever is the absence of a Shravaka, emptiness, peacefulness, and absence of intrinsic nature, up to the absence, emptiness, peacefulness, and absence of intrinsic nature in the state of omniscience, and whatever is a Bodhisattva, the prior extreme, the posterior extreme, and the middle, all of these are non-dual, and there is no making them dual. Shariputra, in that way, a Bodhisattva does not focus on the prior extreme, nor does he focus on the posterior extreme or the middle, which is a negation of what is to be obtained. Shariputra, if someone were to say, "Why is that? Because form is completely boundless in every way, therefore a Bodhisattva should be known as completely boundless in every way." Because feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are completely boundless in every way, therefore a Bodhisattva should be known as completely boundless in every way.

The reason for being called "is" is: Venerable Shariputra, form is equal to space; feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are also equal to space. Why is that? Venerable Shariputra, for example, space does not observe its previous boundary, nor does it observe its later boundary and middle, because it is infinitely boundless. Therefore, it is called space. Venerable Shariputra, similarly, because form is emptiness, it does not observe the previous boundary of form, nor does it observe its later boundary and middle. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, because consciousness is emptiness, it does not observe the previous boundary of consciousness, nor does it observe its later boundary and middle. Because in emptiness, neither boundary nor middle is observed. Venerable Shariputra, therefore, form is universally boundless. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are universally boundless, therefore, the Bodhisattva should be known as universally boundless. Venerable Shariputra, the sense bases, the realms, dependent origination, the perfections, all emptiness, the factors of enlightenment, the noble truths, meditation, the immeasurables, the formless attainments, the ten powers, fearlessness, individual perfect knowledge, and the unshared qualities of the Buddhas are equal to space. Why is that? Venerable Shariputra, for example, space does not observe its previous boundary, nor does it observe its later boundary and middle, because it is infinitely boundless. Therefore, it is called space. Venerable Shariputra, similarly, because the unshared qualities of the Buddhas are emptiness, it does not observe the previous boundary of the unshared qualities of the Buddhas, nor does it observe its later boundary and middle. Because in emptiness, neither boundary nor middle is observed. Venerable Shariputra, therefore, the unshared qualities of the Buddhas are universally boundless, therefore, the Bodhisattva should be known as universally boundless. Venerable Shariputra, whoever says this: 'Why is form a Bodhisattva?'
