When inhaling, one knows exactly that one is inhaling. When exhaling long, one knows exactly that one is exhaling long. When exhaling short, one knows exactly that one is exhaling short. When exhaling short inwards, one knows exactly that one is exhaling short. When inhaling short, one knows exactly that one is inhaling short. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, diligent and endowed, endowed with mindfulness, having eliminated attachment and displeasure towards the world. Abides contemplating the body in his own body, yet without focusing on it, he does not conceptualize the conceptualizations associated with the body. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom. He understands that in this very body there are the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element, and he individually understands each element as it truly is. Subhuti, for example, just as a butcher of cows or a skilled apprentice of a butcher, having slaughtered a cow with a sharp knife, divides it into four parts. Having divided it into four parts, whether standing or sitting, he thoroughly discerns it, similarly, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he also understands that in this very body there are the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element, and he thoroughly discerns each element individually as it truly is. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, diligent and endowed, endowed with mindfulness, having eliminated attachment and displeasure towards the world, abides contemplating the body in his own body, yet without focusing on it, he does not conceptualize the conceptualizations associated with the body. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom. In this very body, from the soles of the feet upwards to the crown of the head downwards, there are hair, brain, nails.

One should thoroughly and accurately contemplate that the ultimate of hair and skin is filled with various impurities. This body has hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, thin skin, flesh, water, blood, bones, legs, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, spleen, large intestine, small intestine, stomach, internal organs, urine, feces, tears, eye mucus, fat, phlegm, snot, pus, rotten blood, bile, phlegm, pus-like fluid, saliva, dirt, brain, brain marrow, eye mucus, earwax, etc., and one should thoroughly and accurately understand this. Subhuti, for example, a farmer's container is filled with various things such as rice, grains, sesame, paddy, mung beans, cowpeas, barley, wheat, lentils, mustard seeds, etc., and then opens it. A person with eyes looks at them and knows: This is rice, this is grain, this is sesame, this is paddy, this is mung bean, this is cowpea, this is barley, this is wheat, this is lentil, this is mustard seed. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should also thoroughly and accurately understand this body, from the soles of the feet up to the crown of the head, and the ultimate of hair, brain, nails, body hair, and skin, is filled with various impurities. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should be steadfast.

The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, endowed with diligence, possessing mindfulness, and endowed with memory, having completely eliminated attachment and displeasure towards the world, dwells contemplating the body in the inner body, and by not fixating on it, does not conceptualize the appearances associated with the body. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if they go to a charnel ground and see various forms of corpses abandoned in the charnel ground, lying on the path of death, whether they have been dead for one day, two days, three days, four days, or five days, and they see them swollen, discolored, putrid, eaten, or scattered, they will think: 'This body also has such a nature, has such a characteristic, and does not deviate from this Dharma-nature.' Thus, they closely associate this body with those corpses. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, endowed with diligence, possessing mindfulness, and endowed with memory, having completely eliminated attachment and displeasure towards the world, dwells contemplating the body in the inner body, and by not fixating on it, does not conceptualize the appearances associated with the body. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if they see a corpse abandoned in a charnel ground, whether it has been dead for six days or seven days, being eaten by crows, ravens, owls, vultures, jackals, foxes, dogs, and various other kinds of non-human creatures, they will think: 'These various bodies also have such a nature, have such a characteristic, and do not deviate from this Dharma-nature.' Thus, they closely associate this body with those corpses. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, endowed with diligence, possessing mindfulness, and endowed with memory, having completely eliminated attachment and displeasure towards the world, dwells contemplating the body in the outer body, and by not fixating on it, does not conceptualize the appearances associated with the body.
