I. Thinking, 'I shall personally experience the suffering of the animal realm and the world of Yama,' in this way, for the sake of all sentient beings, until all sentient beings are completely extinguished from the realm of nirvana without remainder, I shall personally experience all the sufferings of sentient beings, such as hells. Then, first for my own benefit, I shall create the root of virtue, accumulate the accumulations of enlightenment for billions of hundreds of thousands of kalpas, and then attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. One should generate such a mind. Subhuti, this is the vajra-like mind generation that will make the vast multitude of sentient beings and the vast class of sentient beings the most excellent. Subhuti, furthermore, the mind generation of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva that will make all sentient beings the most excellent should be a vast mind. What is the vast mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? It is that from the initial generation of the mind onwards, one does not generate a mind of desire, does not generate a mind of hatred, does not generate a mind of delusion, does not generate a mind of affection, and does not generate a mind of a Hearer or a Solitary Realizer. Subhuti, this is the vast mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva that makes all sentient beings the most excellent, and does not generate pride because of it. Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should possess an unmoving mind. What is the unmoving mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? It is that one keeps in mind the possession of all-aspects knowledge, but does not generate pride because of it. Subhuti, this is the unmoving mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva that makes all sentient beings the most excellent. Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should generate a mind of benefit and happiness for all sentient beings. What is the mind of benefit and happiness of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? It is to protect all sentient beings.

And also, regarding the matter of not completely abandoning all sentient beings, one will not generate pride because of that. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in this, will act in a non-attached manner regarding becoming the foremost among the great assembly of sentient beings and the great category of sentient beings. Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should diligently engage in the yoga of delight in the Dharma and joy in the Dharma. So, what is the Dharma? It is that all Dharmas are without distinction; this is called Dharma. So, what is delight in the Dharma? It is that one generates great joy in the Dharma; this is called delight in the Dharma. So, what is joy in the Dharma? It is that one cultivates and extensively teaches the Dharma; this is called joy in the Dharma. So, what is diligently engaging in the yoga of delight in the Dharma and joy? It is diligent practice; this is called diligently engaging in the yoga of delight in the Dharma and joy in the Dharma. Subhuti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, regarding becoming the foremost among the great multitude of sentient beings and the great category of sentient beings, one should act in a non-attached manner. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, one abides in the emptiness of the internal, abides in the emptiness of the external, abides in the emptiness of the internal and external, and even abides in the emptiness of the nature of non-things; regarding becoming the foremost among the great multitude of sentient beings and the great category of sentient beings, one should act in a non-attached manner. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, one abides in the Dharmas that are aspects of enlightenment, as well as the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the various individual liberations, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha; regarding becoming the foremost among the great multitude of sentient beings and the great category of sentient beings, one should act in a non-attached manner. Practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, one abides in the Samadhi of Courageous Conduct. Like the sky, without formation, one abides in the space of the Samadhi of liberation and non-attachment. One acts in a way that does not perceive the great aggregates of sentient beings and the great multitude of sentient beings as supreme. Subhuti, abiding in those dharmas, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abides in these dharmas, and should become the supreme of the great assembly of sentient beings and the great multitude of sentient beings. Therefore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is said to be the great mind of a Bodhisattva who is the supreme of all sentient beings. Great Abandonment. Then, the venerable Shariputra asked the Blessed One, "For what reason, Blessed One, is one called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? I also dare to speak." The Blessed One said, "Shariputra, for what reason is one called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? You should dare to speak." Shariputra asked, "Blessed One, seeing as self, seeing as sentient being, seeing as life, seeing as a producer, seeing as a nourisher, seeing as a person, seeing as an individual, seeing as born of power, seeing as a son of power, seeing as a doer, seeing as a feeler, seeing as a knower, seeing as a seer, seeing as annihilation, seeing as permanence, seeing as existence, seeing as non-existence, seeing as aggregates, seeing as elements, seeing as sources, seeing as dependent origination, seeing as perfections, seeing as aspects of enlightenment, seeing as powers and fearlessness, seeing as unmixed Buddha-dharmas, seeing as fully ripening sentient beings, seeing as purifying Buddha-fields, seeing as distinguishing enlightenment, seeing as Buddha, seeing as Dharma, seeing as Sangha, seeing as turning the wheel of Dharma, etc., in order to completely abandon all these views, one teaches the Dharma to sentient beings, also acting in a way that does not perceive, for this reason.
