the samadhi, as well as wisdom, as well as liberation, as well as mindfulness, as well as vigilance, as well as proper attention, as well as the eight liberations. What are the eight? A form possessor contemplating form, this is the first liberation. Internally without the perception of form, contemplating external forms, this is the second liberation. Inclined towards ugliness, this is the third liberation. Completely transcending the perception of form, all perceptions of obstruction cease, and without attending to various perceptions, thinking 'space is infinite,' thus, approaching and abiding in the sphere of infinite space, this is the fourth liberation. Completely in all aspects transcending the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' approaching and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the fifth liberation. Completely in all aspects transcending the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing at all,' approaching and abiding in the sphere of nothingness, this is the sixth liberation. Completely in all aspects transcending the sphere of nothingness, approaching and abiding in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the seventh liberation. Completely in all aspects purely transcending the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, approaching and abiding in the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations. The nine successive abidings in meditative states, what are the nine? For example, secluded from desire, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, the first dhyana with joy and bliss born of seclusion, approaching and abiding; and, initial application and sustained application ceasing, internally completely clear, the continuum of mind becoming one, without initial application and without sustained application, the second dhyana with joy and bliss born of samadhi, approaching and abiding; and, detached from desire from joy, endowed with mindfulness and abiding in equanimity with vigilance, experiencing bliss with the body, the noble ones call it having mind
