I am the discriminating thought that does not know purity. They are unbelieving. How do they not believe? They do not believe in the saying, "Form is empty by form." Even up to enlightenment, they do not believe in the saying, "Enlightenment is empty by enlightenment." They are not abiding. How do they not abide? They do not abide in the perfection of generosity. They do not abide in the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation. They do not abide in the perfection of wisdom. They do not abide in the irreversible ground. They do not abide among the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas. They are manifestly attached. How are they manifestly attached? They are manifestly attached to form. They are manifestly attached to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. They are manifestly attached to the eye. They are manifestly attached to the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. They are manifestly attached to the sources, elements, and dependent origination. They are manifestly attached to desire, hatred, and ignorance. They are manifestly attached to views. They are manifestly attached even up to enlightenment. Therefore, they are called childish. Question: World Honored One, is it the case that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who studies in this way does not study the Perfection of Wisdom and does not attain all-knowingness? The World Honored One said: Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who studies in this way does not study the Perfection of Wisdom. He does not attain all-knowingness. Question: World Honored One, for what reason? Why does the Bodhisattva not study the Perfection of Wisdom and not attain all-knowingness? The World Honored One said: Shariputra, in this case, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, due to unskilled means, conceptualizes the Perfection of Wisdom. He becomes manifestly attached. He conceptualizes the Perfection of Meditation. He becomes manifestly attached. He conceptualizes the Perfection of Diligence.

Attachment, manifest attachment. Conceptualizing the perfection of patience, manifest attachment. Conceptualizing the perfection of discipline, manifest attachment. Conceptualizing the perfection of generosity, manifest attachment. Likewise, conceptualizing the meditative absorptions of concentration, immeasurables, and formlessness, manifest attachment. Conceptualizing the mindfulness, right exertion, miraculous feet, faculties, powers, limbs of enlightenment, and the path, manifest attachment. Conceptualizing the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, manifest attachment, up to conceptualizing all dharmas and all-knowingness, manifest attachment. Shariputra, with those aspects, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not study the Prajnaparamita, and all-knowingness does not arise. That is the sixth conceptualization, the conceptualization of not abiding on the noble path. Question: Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva train so that they will definitely arise in all-knowingness by studying the Prajnaparamita? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, if they do not observe the Prajnaparamita and do not truly follow and observe it, then by studying in that way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will definitely arise in all-knowingness in a non-observing manner. Likewise, the perfection of concentration, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of patience, the perfection of discipline, the perfection of generosity, and up to all-knowingness are not observed, and not truly followed and observed. Thus, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva studies the Prajnaparamita, in a non-observing

By means of non-apprehension, one will definitely realize all-knowingness. Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thus engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, and thus learns the Perfection of Wisdom, by means of non-apprehension, he will realize all-knowingness. This is the seventh contemplation, which is contemplation on the object of contemplation. Shariputra asked: "Lord, by what non-apprehending means does one realize all-knowingness?" The Lord replied: "Shariputra, because of extreme purity, I am not apprehended or seen. Similarly, because of extreme purity, even all-knowingness is not apprehended or seen." This is the eighth contemplation, which is contemplation on self and so forth. Shariputra, purity is unborn, unoriginated, and unmanifested. This is the ninth contemplation, which is contemplation on purity, birth, and so forth. These are the first of the apprehended contemplations. The second of the apprehended contemplations: the nine contemplations belonging to the peak. Because of unskilled means, one contemplates form and is manifestly attached to it, and contemplates up to consciousness and is manifestly attached to it. This is the first contemplation associated with the peak, which is contemplation on the meaning of the aggregates. One contemplates the eye and is manifestly attached to it, similarly up to the mind, one manifestly contemplates form and is manifestly attached to it, similarly up to the dharma, one contemplates and is manifestly attached to it. This is the second contemplation, which is contemplation on the meaning of the gate of birth. One contemplates the eye and form, and the realm of eye-consciousness, and is manifestly attached to it, similarly up to the mind and dharma, and the realm of mind-consciousness, one contemplates and is manifestly attached to it. This is the third contemplation, which is contemplation on the meaning of lineage. One contemplates ignorance and is manifestly attached to it, similarly up to old age and death, one contemplates and is manifestly attached to it. This is the fourth contemplation, which is contemplation on the meaning of birth.
