There are twenty signs of non-retrogression on the path of seeing and the path of meditation, and of non-retrogression on the path of application. As it says in the Sutra, at the beginning of the forty-ninth chapter: Thus spoke the Blessed One, and the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what are the characteristics of a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva? And so on, leading to the first sign of turning away from form, etc., as it also says in the Sutra: The Blessed One said: Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not regress from form, etc., is shown. Second, having known and gained faith, doubt is exhausted, as it also says in the Sutra: Subhuti, moreover, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, these ascetics and Brahmins are to be known, etc., is shown. Third, having accomplished the aspiration, being free from wrong views, and abandoning the eight unfavorable conditions, as it also says in the Sutra: Subhuti, moreover, a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva Mahasattva is not born in hell, etc., is shown.
