I, what is called having characteristics, what is called not having characteristics, what is called having aspirations, what is called not having aspirations, one should not abide in a manner that does not focus on these. Such things have been spoken. Starting from the ten grounds, by extensively showing non-abiding, it is taught that it becomes the supreme Dharma. What is taught is the path of the noble Śrāvakas, as it is said in the sutra: "A great Bodhisattva should not abide in the first ground in a way that focuses on characteristics," and up to "In my Buddha-field, may there not even be the sound of a Buddha." It is extensively taught that one should not abide in a way that focuses on characteristics. Why? Because the Buddha said, "Because he knows, he does not see the Dharmas." The sutra that teaches this is as follows: "Thus, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, having manifestly and perfectly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, does not perceive all Dharmas." Starting from these and connecting them with this practice, it is the path of the Śrāvakas. The Bodhisattva is the way of not focusing on anything at all. Having made it the power of knowing the path, it is an explanation of the knowable path of the Śrāvakas. Explanation of the path of the Pratyekabuddhas. Having explained the path of the Śrāvakas, the path of the Pratyekabuddhas will be spoken. In that, for the realization of self-originated nature, there is no need for others to teach, and the wisdom like that of a rhinoceros horn is manifestly spoken of as profound. What is said is the meaning of the Pratyekabuddhas. The meaning of not needing others to teach is that, in the power of the path of the Pratyekabuddhas, one can understand the language of Yakshas, but one cannot understand the meaning of what the venerable Subhūti has taught. It is shown that the Yakshas understand their own language, the sound of the Yakshas. The general is the word, that which completes the meaning one wishes to express with many words is language, which is the meaning of speech. If someone asks about something and one can answer it, that is speaking. One can understand such things, but one cannot understand the meaning of what the venerable Subhūti knows.

Explaining, narrating, indicating, differentiating, clarifying, and definitively showing the Prajnaparamita is unknowable. Indicating after making a request is explaining. Answering after being asked is narrating. These two, explaining based on the ignorance of those to be tamed, is indicating. Specifically indicating based on the carelessness of those who are unrestrained is called differentiating. For example, starting from "Oh sons of the gods, not even a single letter is uttered," prohibiting indicating and listening, because the Prajnaparamita and the perfectly complete enlightenment are without letters, using examples such as a snake's movement, a dream, an echo, and an illusion to indicate the absence of letters, and the absence of listening and understanding. If teaching the Dharma and speaking words do not exist, then how is it possible? Because it is the cause of obtaining the fruit of teaching the Dharma, and speaking words of teaching the Dharma also leads to great distraction, and distraction also causes the mind to become more confused. Therefore, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, when he was previously a Bodhisattva, made the aspiration: "May I, upon attaining Buddhahood, be able to teach the Dharma even without speaking, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, and be able to perfectly accomplish the work of benefiting sentient beings." To show that it is possible to indicate meaning even without speaking, it is said: Whatever and whatever meaning, whatever and whatever thing, how and how to listen to it, in it there is meaning even without sound, it appears thus and thus. This is the indication. This is profound wisdom. As it is said in the Sutra: "How wonderful! The abiding one, Bhavyor, is the clarifier, for indicating what is more profound than the profound, entering what is more subtle than the subtle." The meaning indicated by the abiding one, Subhuti, is incomprehensible and profound, because it is obtained without uttering a single letter, so it is extremely profound. It is also mentioned in other Sutras that by realizing the path of the ten virtuous actions by oneself, and by understanding the profound dependent origination, one perfectly completes the Pratyekabuddha vehicle.
