In order to abandon the great of the great, etc., the nine paths are taught in terms of the distinctions of the small of the small, etc. If those who follow faith and those who follow dharma have already abandoned the sixth, seventh, and eighth qualities, then they will enter the second fruit. If, in order to abandon the nine qualities, they are free from desire from the desire realm up to the realm of nothingness, then they have entered the third fruit. In the sixteenth moment, they will abide in the fruit of non-return, but not in the fruit of arhatship. Why is that? Because what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing is not abandoned by the path of meditation. It is also impossible to be free from desire for the peak of existence before. At that time, those who were previously dull-witted followers of faith are called faith-liberated. Because faith-liberation itself is liberation, it is the liberation of liberation, the distinction of liberation. Those who were previously sharp-witted followers of dharma are called vision-attained. Because wisdom-liberation itself is liberation, it is the distinction of liberation. Thus, abiding in the second and third fruits is the realm of faith-liberation. Shariputra, those bodhisattvas who are unskilled in means practice the four dhyanas, also practice the six perfections, and having attained dhyana, are born in the realm of long-lived gods. Having died and transmigrated from there, if they are born among gods and humans in the desire realm, there are also those whose faculties become dull. Abiding in the second and third fruits is the realm of vision-attained. Shariputra, those bodhisattvas who are skilled in means enter into dhyana and formless absorptions, and also enter into the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. But not because of dhyana, etc., but because of skillful means, wherever they are

Those who please the Blessed Buddhas and become associated with them are those who, inseparable from the yoga of Prajñāpāramitā, can attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment with this excellent mind. As for the explanation of the Once-Returner, Shariputra! Bodhisattvas who practice Prajñāpāramitā, if skilled in means, enter into dhyana and formless samādhi, from the vast abode of Tushita, and remain there for as long as their lives last, and after death, are born here, as is truly declared. Also, in various Buddha-fields, there are those who attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and so on. These are for the sake of returning to this world once and entering into Nirvana elsewhere. As for the explanation of the Non-Returner, Shariputra! Thus, Bodhisattvas who have attained the six superknowledges do not take birth in the desire realm, the form realm, or the formless realm. However, from Buddha-field to Buddha-field, starting from there, wherever the Blessed Buddhas reside, there are those who cause them to be born there. The Non-Returner never creates a second birth in that same place, but rather goes to a superior state. Thus, this Non-Returner is completely accomplished, because wherever they are born, they never return. The explanation of the Stream-Enterer is that there are two types of birth from lineage to lineage, namely birth from human lineage to lineage, and birth from divine lineage to lineage. Among these, the former is, Shariputra! Bodhisattvas who generate dhyana, dhyana, and formless attainments, and are skilled in means, in human lineages, either born into a Kshatriya lineage like a great Sala tree, or born into a Brahmin lineage like a great Sala tree, or born into a householder lineage like a great Sala tree, as has been said. That is affliction.

Having abandoned the third and fourth (afflictions), and having obtained their antidote, the uncontaminated faculty, because they still need to be born two or three more times, they are superior to the stream-enterer. The second is: Shariputra, bodhisattvas who have attained samadhi and so forth, who are skilled in means, are born from the realm of the Four Great Kings up to the others, the lords of transformation, and even there they please the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. That is what is said. What is said as once-returner is the one-interval: Shariputra, there are bodhisattvas who have attained the four dhyanas up to the four noble truths, but do not manifest them. Know that they are obstructed by one lifetime. This is because they have abandoned seven and eight kinds of afflictions, obtained their antidote, the uncontaminated faculty, and only one birth remains, so they are superior to the once-returner, and are one-interval. Because they have abandoned nine kinds of afflictions, the stage of non-returner is explained in five ways. For example, completely passing into nirvana in the intermediate state: Shariputra, bodhisattvas who have attained samadhi and so forth, who are skilled in means, are born from the gods of the Brahma realm up to the gods of Akanistha. That is what is said. This is because they manifest enlightenment in any of the god realms from the Brahma realm up to Akanistha, and here they show manifest enlightenment and so forth. Completely passing into nirvana after being born: Shariputra, bodhisattvas who, at the very moment of first generating the mind, manifest enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and after they completely pass into nirvana, the sacred Dharma remains for a kalpa or more than a kalpa. This is because they enter the path with diligence. Passing into nirvana through manifest action: Shariputra, bodhisattvas who practice the six perfections, going from one world to another
