Some people, seeking gain, desiring wealth, respect, and offerings, with minds full of dependence and attachment, thus rely on the merits practiced by monks, those who carry dusters, or those who dwell together in one place, or any other merits, and abide therein. They think to themselves: How wonderful it would be if others would attend to me, respect me, make offerings to me, remember me! How wonderful it would be if I could also obtain gain, respect, and offerings! Thinking thus in their minds, seeking gain and respect, desiring gain and so on, acting in such a manner, this is what is called "hypocrisy." What is called "flattery" is when some people, desiring gain and respect, say to others: You are just like my mother, like my father, like my brother, like any relative, like the in-laws of tomorrow. Please give to me as well, and we will give to you. Please do this deed, and we will do it for you. I come from a very far place, and my staying here is also for your sake! Saying this, they will be cherished. Seeking gain, desiring gain and so on, with minds full of dependence and attachment, speaking flattering words to others in such a manner, speaking universally, speaking completely, seeking, connecting with sweet words, doing the work of flattery, this is what is called "flattery." What is called "begging" is when some people separately examine, relying on gain, using things and their reasons as a means. For example, saying: Your begging bowl is so beautiful! Or saying: Your Dharma robe, cushion, bedding, crooked key, or this and that of your utensils are so good! If I could obtain something like this, it would be good to keep, but it is difficult to find a donor! Or going to any house, also saying this: Your rice is so delicious! The beans are so good! The upper garment is so good! The clothes are so good! What you are preparing or what is to be eaten is

is good. In the past, you should have given to us and accomplished things for us, and we were happy with your giving and accomplishing. Now, you think that you will not give to us or accomplish things for us, saying such things. Examining this one by one, whatever arises from greed, stating that thing itself as the reason for begging, this is called begging. "Definitely declaring" means that some people, seeking gain, with minds attached to desiring gain and other things, say to others, "You should not give to your mother, nor to your father, nor to your sister, nor to any relatives or future in-laws. What should you give or accomplish?" And going to some houses, they also say, "An Arhat has entered your house, and you have met with the Arhat, lived together, and talked together. You have truly obtained gain! You have obtained good gain! You have obtained good wealth! Being a person is also meaningful!" They think, "No other renunciant or Brahmin has entered our house except for this noble one, so this noble one must be called an Arhat." What is wrong with thinking like that? Seeking gain, with minds attached to desiring gain and other things, definitely proclaiming such behavior to others, this is called definitely declaring. Contentment is increasing the desire for gain with gain. Seeking gain with gain means that some people, whether they are kings, ministers of kings, Brahmins, householders, or any other superior person, having received a bowl, Dharma robes, monastic skirt, a crooked key, a cushion, or any other utensil, boast to others, saying, "This was given to me by such and such a great king or a holy person."

I think that these things should also be temporarily given to the noble ones in this way, or I think that things that should be done should be done. Why don't we also think about giving to the noble ones or doing what should be done? Thinking this way, I feel it is okay. Then, that kind of greed and seeking for the gains of others is seeking gains with gains. If you ask, what is the relationship between impurity and so on when generating the mind of enlightenment? It is for the purpose of knowing that the mind of enlightenment is a non-retrogressive dharma. There are nine causes of regression, namely: attachment to lust, great desire, not knowing satisfaction, not knowing satisfaction, liking noise, laziness, forgetfulness, distraction, perverse wisdom, and liking elaboration. In order to counteract these, impurity and so on are explained. Similarly, for other things such as the attention to exhaling and inhaling, it should also be explained as appropriate. In the fourth mind generation, it is said that "the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who wants to cross over by seeing the omniscient, wants to perfect the path wisdom, and wants to attain all kinds of wisdom", among which, the vision of wisdom is the actualization of the Bodhisattva. The first ground is included in the path of seeing, which is what is said, "The Bodhisattva wants to enter without fault." The ground of path wisdom dwells on the non-retrogressive ground, which is what is said, "Wanting to dwell on the non-retrogressive ground." The non-retrogressive ground is also the eighth ground of the Bodhisattva, as it is said in that sutra, "It is called the ground of wisdom non-retrogressing." That sutra also says, "The Bodhisattva should dwell," which means wanting to transcend the ground of innocence. The ground of innocence is also what is said in that sutra, as it is said in that sutra, "Because there is no fault, it is called the ground of innocence." Transcending this ground is the remaining matter manifested by the true exhortation of all Buddhas and Tathagatas.
