The sixteen instants are the correct signs of non-retrogression for the wise who abide on the path of seeing. The characteristics of the signs of the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva Sangha abiding on the path of seeing have been explained. Now, since the signs of abiding on the path of meditation are to be stated, therefore it is said: The path of meditation is profound. Thus it is said. As it is said: Blessed One, please explain well the profound and profound abodes. Repeating is the meaning of repeatedly familiarizing oneself with meditation. The word 'abode,' being spoken of as a dwelling place, is the meaning of showing that it possesses continuity. Wherever the great Bodhisattva abides, from the four close placements of mindfulness up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, completely accomplishing them, it is the meaning of knowing that it is the very cause of the complete perfection of all realizations. Furthermore, what is the profundity of this? It is said: Profound emptiness and so forth. That is, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, absence of activity, absence of birth, detachment from desire, cessation, peace, suchness, and ultimate reality are said to be the very abodes of profundity. Why are emptiness and so forth profound? It is said: That profound one is liberated from the extremes of superimposition and denial. Thus it is said. Among these, liberation from the extreme of superimposition is this: also turning away from form, and in suchness there is no form, whatever is said. Among these, liberation from the extreme of denial is this: also showing Nirvana, and apart from form there is no suchness, whatever is said. Thus, by turning away from all phenomena and truly showing Nirvana, the profound abode of form and so forth is shown. Furthermore, what is the path of meditation? It is said: The limbs of ascertainment and the path of seeing, and on the very nature of the path of meditation, repeatedly applying the mind, and measuring and ascertaining, are the path of meditation. Thus it is said. Whenever these profound abodes, which are endowed with the Perfection of Wisdom, are closely needed

Because it shows the meaning of dispelling, therefore those were spoken. To contemplate and act is through the wisdom of the nature of listening. To measure means the wisdom of the nature of thinking. To ascertain and know means the wisdom of the nature of meditation. Again, if asked, what is the object of the path of meditation? "The decisive part and the seeing path, the path and the path of meditation itself." Thus it was said. Whatever is said, "I should abide in this way," this is from the perspective of the decisive part, as it is said in the Prajñāpāramitā. Whatever is said, "I should train in this way," this is from the perspective of the seeing path, as it is said in the Prajñāpāramitā. Whatever is said, "I should accomplish in this way," this is from the perspective of the path of meditation, as it is said in the Prajñāpāramitā. Therefore, from the perspective of the four decisive parts and the seeing path and the path of meditation, to accomplish in that way, to ascertain and know in that way, to closely know in that way, to be diligent in that way, to combine in that way, to strive in that way, these six words were spoken. How is it that abiding in the path of meditation itself is the object? Because it is continuous, therefore the later object is the former, there is no fault. The three benefits of the path of meditation are, from completely holding the immeasurable roots of virtue, like the analogy of many thoughts of uniting with other women and making gestures with assembled men, immeasurable merit arises, thereby abandoning samsara for immeasurable eons, and "turning the back," "becoming the terminator," etc., as spoken by the words "exhaustion," "subjugation," and "not generating what was not previously generated," through these it is known that it is the action of the path of meditation, with such meaning those were spoken. How many kinds are those? Because that is continuous, "Small, medium, and large, the differences of small of small, etc., are considered to be nine kinds by type." Thus it was said. Combine with the dissimilar and the opposing aspects. Small, medium, and large

Three are the fundamental aspects, and when these are each divided into small, medium, and large, they become nine aspects. Namely: small of small, medium of small, large of small, small of medium, medium of medium, large of medium, small of large, medium of large, and large of large. Just as with the antidotal side, one should also understand the dissimilar side. Among these, the small of small path is from abandoning the great of great conceptualization until the great of great abandons the small of small. Because it is impossible to have a great path only at the beginning, or a great path only with a great path, or when a great path arises, it is impossible to have great afflictions. For example, first removing the large stains from clothes, and then cleaning the fine ones; great darkness is dispelled by small light, and small is dispelled by great, this analogy applies here. White Dharma is powerful, while black is weak, so even a small moment of the noble path, from the absence of samsara, is transmitted one after another, thereby uprooting the firm great afflictions from the root. Master Vasubandhu also said that just as bathing with the ashes of Durga (梵文:Durga) eliminates diseases accumulated over many lifetimes, so too a small moment of light destroys great darkness. Among these, the great of great of conceptualization refers to being separated from the Prajnaparamita, surpassing offering material gifts to the Three Jewels for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, and so on. Abandoning this, the small aspect of the path is striving to listen to the Prajnaparamita, etc., which itself is a great increase of merit. Why is that? Because the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who awaken to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment is this, which is what is said by this reason. The medium of great conceptualization refers to beginning with entering the stream in that same kalpa, the Tathagata enemy
