Those. Small also has distinctions such as small, etc., desiring nine types by category. Thus it is said. The dissimilar and the antidotal sides should be connected in this way. Small, medium, and large are the three fundamental categories. Furthermore, when each of those is divided into small, medium, and large distinctions, they become nine types. For example: small of the small, medium of the small, large of the small, small of the medium, medium of the medium, large of the medium, small of the large, medium of the large, and large of the large. Just as with the antidotal side, the dissimilar side should also be understood. Among these, the small of the small path, from abandoning the great of the great conceptualizations, up to the great of the great abandoning the small of the small. It is impossible to have a great path at the beginning, or it is impossible to have a great path at the beginning, or when a great path arises, it is impossible to have great afflictions. Just as one first removes the large stains from clothes and then cleans the fine stains. Great darkness is dispelled by small light, and small darkness is dispelled by great light, this metaphor is what is meant here. White dharma has power, while black is weak, therefore even a small moment of the noble path, from the absence of samsara, passes from one to another, uprooting the firm afflictions from the root. Master Vasubandhu also said that just as bathing with Durvida grass eliminates diseases accumulated over a long time, so too a small moment of light destroys great darkness. Among these, the great of the great category of conceptualizations refers to what is said about being separated from the Prajnaparamita, surpassing giving material offerings to the Three Jewels for as many kalpas as the sands of the Ganges. Abandoning this, the small category of the path refers to striving to listen to the Prajnaparamita, etc., which itself is a great increase of merit. Why is that? Because the great Bodhisattvas who attain perfect enlightenment with their unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

Therefore, this is what was said with the reason that "the path is this." Regarding the medium of great discrimination, it is what was said that, with such reason, from continuously entering into such kalpa, to offering material goods to the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, is superior. The so-called "such reason" is because of being separated from the perfection of wisdom. Similarly, it should be applied to the following situations as well. Abandoning this, the medium of the small path is: if one strives for the perfection of wisdom, then this Dharma is indeed the increase of merit. Why is that? Because it transcends the grounds of the Śrāvakas and others, one will manifest and realize the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, which is what was said with such reason. Regarding the small of great discrimination, again, with such reason, residing in such kalpa, it surpasses giving, morality, patience, diligence, meditation, and cultivating wisdom. Abandoning this, the great of the small path is: on the other hand, just one day possessing giving and so on, merit will greatly increase. Why is that? Because abiding in this, one can perfect all Dharmas, so the perfection of wisdom is generated by the great Bodhisattvas, which is what was said with such reason. The so-called "on the other hand" is possessing striving for the perfection of wisdom. Similarly, it should be applied to the following situations as well. Regarding the great of medium discrimination, again, with such reason, in such kalpa, it surpasses giving the Dharma to sentient beings. Abandoning this, the small of the middle path is: on the other hand, just one day of giving the Dharma, that merit will greatly increase. Why is that? Because those who are not separated from the perfection of wisdom and are separated from the perfection of wisdom are said to be the reason for not being separated from and being separated from all-knowingness. Regarding medium discrimination, again, with such reason, in such kalpa, from the four dhyānas and the four mindfulnesses, to striving for the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha.
