Non-apprehending discriminations are twofold. Why? Because it is said for the purpose of empowering the characteristics of discrimination. As it is said, "Subhuti, just as I have shown you to be the foremost among those who abide in non-affliction, it is well said, well said." Here, the merit of abiding in non-affliction is spoken of as being skilled in preventing the arising of discriminations in oneself and others, and therefore it is clear, and it is known as the meaning of being empowered. Here, the first apprehending discrimination has nine aspects. The discrimination of ignorance is the clinging to what is not as it is, due to the power of ignorance. As Shariputra said, "These dharmas are not as they are manifested and clung to by ordinary beings. As they do not exist, so they exist, and because they do not exist in that way, they are called ignorance." The discrimination of the aggregates such as form is as Shariputra said, "Form is not existent because of its emptiness." The discrimination of clinging to name and form is that ordinary beings cling to ignorance and craving, and do not know or see the dharmas that do not exist as they are. They impute and cling to those dharmas, as it is said. The discrimination of attachment to the two extremes is that they discriminate the two extremes that do not exist because of their clinging to dharmas. They do not know or see form, and so on, and therefore they enter into the number called "childish," as it is said. The discrimination of not knowing the completely defiled and the purified is that they do not know or see the causes of ignorance and craving. What do they not know or see? They do not know or see that form is completely defiled. Likewise, they do not know or see that form is purified, and that they do not arise from the desire realm, nor do they arise from the dharmas of the hearers and solitary realizers, as it is said. Not abiding in the noble path,

Discrimination is: Those are unbelief, not believing "form is empty of form," and so on, up to not believing "bodhi is empty of bodhi"; those are not abiding in the perfection of generosity, and so on, up to not abiding among the unshared qualities of the Buddha, these are what was said. The discrimination of the object is: Shariputra, when a great Bodhisattva practices the perfection of wisdom, he does not perceive the perfection of wisdom, does not correctly follow and see. If one learns in this way, then the all-knowingness arises in the manner of non-perception, and so on, these are what was said. The discrimination of self and so on is: Shariputra, I do not perceive, do not correctly follow and see, because it is extremely pure, and so on, up to such all-knowingness, these are what was said. The discrimination of purity, birth, and so on is: Shariputra, purity is unborn, unarisen, without manifestation, these are what was said. The first part of the discrimination of the apprehended has been explained. Secondly, when speaking of the object of mere purification, that is also divided into nine types by the distinctions of aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, and so on, which belong to the part of purification. Among them, the discrimination of the meaning of aggregates is: He is not skilled in means, therefore he discriminates and clings to form, and so on, up to discriminating and clinging to consciousness, these are what was said. The meaning of aggregates is because it is an accumulation. The discrimination of the meaning of the gate of birth is: He discriminates and clings to the eye, and so on, up to the mind, and he discriminates and clings to form, and so on, up to thus discriminating and clinging to dharma, these are what was said. The meaning of the gate of birth is because it is the meaning of the sense base. The discrimination of the meaning of the realm is: In the realm of eye and form and eye consciousness,

Whatever is said, such as, in terms of the meaning of the seed, it is the meaning of the element (dhātu). In terms of the meaning of birth, the distinction is to distinguish and cling to ignorance, what is said from "is" to "similarly," the meaning of arising from the unborn is the meaning of birth. In terms of the meaning of emptiness, the distinction is to distinguish and cling from the emptiness therein to the emptiness of the nature of non-entity, whatever is said, just being non-existent, because it becomes the antidote created by views, it is not appropriate. In terms of the meaning of going to the other shore, the distinction is to distinguish and cling to the six perfections, whatever is said, just being non-entity, because it cannot become the perfection of fulfilling the benefit of oneself and others. In terms of the meaning of the path of seeing, what is said is to merely distinguish and cling to the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, whatever is said, the moments of existing forbearance and wisdom can become the power of separation. In terms of the meaning of the path of meditation, what is said is to distinguish and cling to those meditations, those superknowledges, those immeasurables, and those formless absorptions, whatever is said, because one abides in existence, one must completely transcend from the limbs of meditation, and because one focuses on the formless absorption, one should completely transcend. In terms of the meaning of the path of no more learning, what is said is to distinguish and cling from the ten powers of the Tathagata to the omniscient wisdom, whatever is said, because the deed done is the limit of the completion of the training that is the basis of that itself. The second part of the distinction of what is taken has been completed. Now, the first part of the distinction of the basis or destruction of a person existing as a substance will be explained. That has nine aspects, namely, distinguishing between self and lord, such as Shariputra, I do not particularly notice self, sentient beings, life, person, I do not particularly notice, and so on.
