Those who say "without characteristics" refer to the path of the Hearers, which is related to the characteristics of things, so there is no contradiction with this. Whatever is said, such as "without manifest clinging," needs to be examined. If merely being without manifest clinging is being without manifest clinging, then because it does not exist, there is no need for an antidote. But if it is not manifest clinging, then it would follow that it is the eye, etc., which is unreasonable. How are they inconsistent? In that way, it is manifest clinging; how is it an antidote? In that way, it is not manifest clinging. And how are they inconsistent? It is clinging to existence and non-existence, which is aroused by untrue discriminations. How is it an antidote? It is that those do not exist. And how do those not exist? Just as it will be explained immediately: Shariputra, if for that which is without mind, existence itself or non-existence itself is non-existent or invisible, then what is the mind without mind, does it exist? Is such a refutation reasonable? This is especially said in reference to non-abiding and universal non-knowing. Having taken control of the truths of cessation and the path, and through the differences of the warm object of observation and aspects, it is said: Cessation should be manifested in this way, through this, manifest cessation, the path should be cultivated in this way, etc., that is, without manifest clinging, etc. Among these, "in this way" refers to the four aspects of each of the four truths. "This" refers to the aspects of enlightenment that have become its collection. Here, cessation and the path are said to be the gate of liberation, that is, without characteristics. There are three kinds of characteristics: relying on all afflicted and purified dharmas; the characteristic of manifest clinging that does not rely; and the characteristic of particularly existing as the basis of learning and non-learning for what should be practiced and what should not be practiced; and the perfections such as giving, and those that are not perfections, etc.

For them, this is the mark of knowing all aspects of skillful and unskillful means. Conversely, in order to show the absence of marks, it is said: This is complete affliction. This is complete purification. These dharmas are to be cultivated. These dharmas are not to be cultivated, from this is skillful means, this is not skillful means, thus manifesting attachment and especially abiding and knowing everything, this is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's attachment to the Dharma that is in accordance, becoming a fault, and so on. To be in accordance is to crave the Dharma of realization. To be in accordance means to crave the Dharma of entering the right path. Fault is a synonym for affliction. The craving for the Dharma of realization that is in accordance, that is said to be the great fault at the peak of a Bodhisattva. Based on this, the venerable Shariputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without skillful means, practices the six perfections, relies on the three doors of liberation, even if he does not fall into the level of a Hearer or Solitary Buddha, and does not enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva, this is the great fault at the peak of a Bodhisattva. Again, one might ask, what is the faultlessness of a Bodhisattva? Starting from not seeing outer emptiness as inner emptiness, it is said that those who each see emptiness in various ways mutually negate each other. This is because the mark of one's own nature disappears, so it shows that cessation is without marks. Here, the path is also without marks. It is said that by learning in that way, one can know form, but one should not become arrogant because of it, until one knows the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, but one should not become arrogant because of it, and until one knows the mind of enlightenment, but one should not become arrogant because of it. This is because there is no mark of arrogance, so it is the path without marks, thus showing the difference in the object of the truth of the path. If it is like a boat, should it also be abandoned? Why?
