Practicing as a Bodhisattva, rejoicing and encouraging all virtuous deeds, and not doing anything with body, speech, and mind that is irrelevant to the meaning. Increasing is divided into two types: not increasing and increasing. Not increasing is divided into two aspects: cause and effect. In terms of cause, it includes not knowing how to dedicate merit, incomplete dedication, incorrect dedication, impure dedication, and not extensive dedication. Not knowing how to dedicate merit refers to promising sentient beings something but not giving them Dharma, wealth, or refuge. If the recipient does not want, does not need, or does not benefit, there is no fault. Incomplete dedication refers to intending to give but not actually giving. Similarly, if the recipient does not want, does not need, does not benefit, benefits little, or is harmed, there is no fault. Incorrect dedication refers to dedicating to one object but giving to another. If one object is powerful and the other does not want, etc., as above, there is no fault. Impure dedication refers to expecting a return, calculating kindness, or not expecting benefit in this life. If the Dharma increases as a result and one has no desires for this life in mind, there is no fault. Not extensive dedication refers to seeking fame or subjugating others; if this benefits the teachings and one does not have these thoughts in mind, there is no fault. There are also five aspects in terms of effect: incomplete dedication refers to not dedicating the root of virtue even after practicing the six perfections. Not knowing how to dedicate refers to expecting great results from causes such as generosity, such as great enjoyment. Incorrect dedication refers to dedicating for oneself. Impure dedication refers to not wishing for sentient beings to attain Buddhahood. Not extensive dedication refers to not expanding the perfection of wisdom. To increase, one must do the opposite of the above: knowing, complete, not incorrect, pure, extensive. Because Bodhisattvas have great aspirations, they give to sentient beings with incomplete dedication, etc. Dedicating with extensiveness, etc., for the benefit of all sentient beings, may I attain the four bodies, and after becoming a Buddha, may I place all sentient beings in the four bodies. Furthermore, pray as in the sutras and other treatises. Those with small aspirations, until all sentient beings attain Buddhahood, may they act for the benefit of sentient beings and accomplish it, and also pray as in the sutras and treatises. With great extensiveness, rejoice in and dedicate the virtuous causes and effects of the world. There are three methods for repairing degeneration: the extent of the degeneration, the method,

The method of remedying transgressions by the ignorant. Its extent: Among the four root downfalls, the first root downfall occurs when one seeks gain and honor for oneself, is extremely attached to respect, praises oneself and disparages others. The second root downfall occurs when one has wealth and food but is stingy and does not give to those who are suffering, without protectors, hungry, etc., who are begging, and when one does not give the Dharma with compassion to those who desire the Dharma with faith, respect, and goodness. The third root downfall occurs when anger flares up, one becomes angry with others, and with fighting, etc., one does not listen to others' confessions and beats them, etc., clinging to anger. The fourth root downfall for a Bodhisattva occurs when one denigrates the Great Vehicle Dharma treasury that saves sentient beings, or when one teaches or listens to non-Dharma that others have remedied as if it were Dharma. Like the twenty branch downfalls, vows such as offerings to the Three Jewels with afflicted and unafflicted minds. The actual means of remedy: Whichever of the four root downfalls occurs, if one has deteriorated from a strong affliction, one restores it as before with regret. If the affliction is moderate, one confesses before three virtuous individuals with a sense of shame and embarrassment, and asks if one has repented, answering "I have repented" three times, and promising to protect oneself in the future. If the affliction is weak, one confesses before one person, and asks if one has repented, answering "I have repented" three times. If branch downfalls occur, one confesses in the same way. The difference between transgressions and non-transgressions can be known from the commentary on the twenty branch downfalls. The method of generating certainty has two aspects: remedy and changing behavior. Generating certainty through remedy: For example, Magadha Shariputra, after generating the mind of enlightenment in the presence of the Buddha, was meditating in the cave of the three secrets to the west of Vulture Peak Mountain when a Brahmin came to beg. After giving him whatever he wanted, the Brahmin said he wanted his right hand. So he cut off his right hand, placed it on his left hand, and gave it to him, but the Brahmin did not want it. Thinking that he could not accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, he wanted to take it back, but the Brahmin did not want it either. So he became discouraged and abandoned both the aspiration and the action vows. At that time, the Buddha spoke verses from the sky: The one with skillful means is the Bodhicitta; The one without skillful means is the Hearer; Because you are not skilled in means, He does not rejoice in the left.
