Whatever has passed away does not exist. What is to come is not obtained. The place has been completely transformed. Where does what is happening now reside? The nature of suchness does not appear. What appears is not the same as suchness. Consciousness is not my form. Non-consciousness is the best place. Thus it is said, and here it is not elaborated. All dharmas are without self, and abide as they are taught. We also acknowledge this. If it is said that all dharmas, without self, appear in various forms as described, then it should be said that from beginningless nature, due to the power of ignorance, beings appear merely as illusions on what is not true. For example, dreams, illusions, mirages, cities of gandharvas, and so on, although they do not truly exist, are similar to appearances. Question: It is not true that the examples of dreams and the like show that beings do not exist, because dreams and the like are empty of actual function, while beings appear to have actual function. Answer: It should be said that dreams and the like, although they do not appear as objects, do have actual function. For example, in a dream, although the union of male and female organs does not actually exist, the phenomenon of semen production appears to exist. Similarly, although beings like images do not actually exist, beings appear merely as illusions. Question: If it is accepted that beings do not exist and are merely illusions, as illustrated by dreams, illusions, and the like, then there is still the deluded consciousness that focuses on objects. For example, although illusions, cities of gandharvas, and the like do not exist, there is a deluded consciousness that focuses on them. Answer: It should be said that the very nature of deluded consciousness, the nature by which beings understand and know, shows that these beings are without mind. The very appearance of beings as existing when they do not exist is also untrue. Since it is untrue, how can the deluded consciousness truly exist by its nature? Therefore, it does not exist. In the world, how can there be sprouts without seeds and so on?

Such a Dharma has not been seen. After thus explaining in various ways that all dharmas are without substance, some may object, saying, 'If all dharmas are empty of essence, how will it not become nihilism? If one admits to being a nihilist, then one denies the existence of the afterlife, which is almost the same as the doctrine of the Lokayata.' To this, it should be said: Those who speak of emptiness in words, Do not speak of nihilism. In nirvana and samsara, The great beings do not abide. Thus it is said. Similarly, the venerable Nagarjuna said in the Inconceivable Praise: Knowing that, one does not hold to annihilation, Nor to permanence, for all beings are empty, Like mirages. Just as water in a mirage, Is neither permanent nor annihilated. Thus it is said that all beings, Are without permanence or annihilation, like mirages. It is said that those who rely on the wisdom of non-objectification of all dharmas, and who abide in the great compassion of the great beings, and who, by the power of their former vows, are appointed to guide sentient beings, do not abide in samsara or nirvana. In order to establish these meanings, the venerable Nagarjuna said in the Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment: These dharmas do not depart from the Dharma, Their own nature, like much sugarcane, And the heat of the nature of fire. Likewise, the nature of all dharmas, Should be known as emptiness. If one says that self-nature is empty, Then one does not speak of annihilation, Nor does one speak of permanence. Thus it is said. If all dharmas are emptiness, why do all dharmas not become its nature? If one thinks thus, then it should be said that, due to the power of the great compassion of the Blessed One, for those who desire liberation, the selflessness of all dharmas is taught as the supreme thing to be accepted. That is truly understood by the noble ones, each with their own self-cognizant wisdom. But those who are reversed by unreasonableness, the childish ones, cannot understand it.
