Thus it is said. Among those, from higher to higher, all those endowed with excellent qualities say that the mantra vehicle is the most supreme of all. Therefore, what are the special qualities of the mantra vehicle should be explained. In the "Lamp of Three Modes," it says: "Although it is one meaning, there is no confusion; many methods, without difficulty; it empowers the sharp faculties; the mantra vehicle is extremely superior." Thus it is said. Similarly, in the mantra method called "Glorious First," it says: "Oneself is all the Buddhas, and also all the Bodhisattvas; therefore, through the union of one's own deity, one should quickly accomplish oneself." Thus it is said. Again, similarly: "Whether standing or sitting, walking or however dwelling, laughing or speaking well, wherever and however dwelling, even if not entered into mandalas, even if possessing all obscurations, possessing the nature of union with one's own deity, even with little merit, one will accomplish." Thus it is said. Again, similarly: "Even those who commit great sins, such as the five heinous crimes, in this unsurpassed vehicle, in this supreme vehicle, they will accomplish." Thus it is said. Again, the special qualities of that are spoken of: "Through bliss, one will attain enlightenment; bodily suffering is not enlightenment; because from samadhi arises, the bliss of mind will lead to Buddhahood." Thus, and so on, it is extensively spoken of. Thus, as spoken of, the great mantra vehicle with qualities, through effortless practice, in a single moment, enables one to attain manifest enlightenment. From higher to higher, through undeluded means, the blessings of the great compassion of the Blessed One, whatever is spoken of, that is the essence of that very reality, shown here, and should be spoken of here. Here, now, on the path of existence, those sentient beings now born and to be born, those seen and heard, are not suitable vessels for the practice of mantra. Those who are presently born are driven by ignorance, and their lineage is burned by the fire kindled by the wood of evil views such as grasping at self and what belongs to self; the wind of their own conceptual thoughts scatters their minds, and those with inferior intelligence grasp wrongly.

Those who are afflicted with minds infected by various epidemics of clinging, those wretched ones whose wisdom is distracted by the valor of afflictions, how could they practice the extremely vast, transcendent conduct that is characterized by thoroughly distinguishing the profound distinctions of the means taught in the tantric tradition without inversion? Considering beings with such characteristics, the Bhagavan, the all-knowing and all-seeing one, knowing the conduct of future beings, spoke of the prohibition of the mantra path. In this regard, the Bhagavan said in the teachings of the tantric vehicle: "Those who do not know wisdom and are covered by the stain of self-grasping, their transcendent conduct will only lead to hell." And again in the same text: "Having abandoned excellent means, violating vows and so forth, whoever does other things, that one will burn in... For example, in this blazing fire, throwing in grass and trees, etc., will only turn to ashes, and will not grow again. Likewise, separated from that, doing extremely marvelous deeds, as long as space exists, after death, one will go to hell." And also: "Having examined well and analyzed well, the wise should enter. Otherwise, entering the fire, even one-sixteenth cannot be endured." And again: "Having known that, whoever relies with certainty on special faith, that will be accomplished, otherwise, one will fall into the great hell." And so forth, extensively spoken, therefore, for ordinary beings, the teaching of the mantra path is prohibited. We also, by the words of prohibition spoken by the Bhagavan, in this place where the essence of suchness is gathered, have not taught the distinctions of the means taught in the tantric path. The meaning of the Great Vehicle is slightly summarized, and after gathering it, it is condensed into essence. If there is anything slightly unclear here, then examine it well elsewhere. Here, with dharma numbers and so forth, there are many in the Madhyamaka scriptures, and by elaborately explaining and distinguishing, it is to dispel confusion. For those who are of the nature of delight in the Great Vehicle.

For sentient beings with initial karma, in order to realize the true Suchness, I will explain the essence of Suchness. Moistened by the taste of the nectar of compassion, with a joyful mind for the benefit of sentient beings, and for the sake of desiring enlightenment with faith, I have compiled this. Here, whatever is of inferior intelligence, or whatever has been done without examination, and all those with slight arguments, may the wise ones forgive me. With this pure nectar of Suchness, may the lineage be purified by compassion. Other than the Thus-Gone One, other enjoyments are inauspicious. Therefore, for those who are difficult to explain to, for those with minds that follow sectarian views, in order to purify that intelligence, one enters the teachings with compassion. Its nature is profound and extremely vast, and those who possess a nature that has not been cultivated, the enemy of ignorance will slander the Great Vehicle of self and others. Some are obscured by ignorance, and whatever obstructs Suchness, for them, there is not even a happy rebirth, so how can liberation be attained? Abiding in the way of the Great Vehicle, the son of the Brahmin Naga King, the glorious Dharma Lord, has made the essence of the compilation of Suchness. From the ocean of nectar of Suchness of the Thus-Gone One, having taken it with compassion for the benefit of beings, whatever excellent virtue has been accumulated, may it eliminate all the faults of beings, and may all embodied beings turn to the one Suchness. The Condensed Essence of Suchness, completed by the Teacher Dharma Lord. Translated, revised, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Janardana and the Tibetan Translator Bhikshu Rinchen Zangpo.
