It also explains sixteen kinds of classifications. So, what is meditation? It is what the supreme manifest victor has taught. The teacher Vasubandhu also explained it in the Compendium of Topics. Therefore, those who wish to meditate on it should understand it from these (treatises). The path of application and the path of seeing are the paths of learning, and there are four kinds of classifications of the path of learning. Even if that is indeed the case, the differences between the three faculties of inferior, intermediate, and superior, as explained in the Abhidharma-kosa, should also be briefly explained here. First of all, after a yogi has taken the vows of individual liberation, he should abide in morality, knowing that "morality is like the earth, and all qualities depend on it like seeds," and strive to protect its purity. Then, by listening to treatises that are in accordance with the four noble truths and by generating wisdom through the nature of one's own hearing and thinking, one should diligently engage in meditation. That is to say, "Abiding in morality, possessing hearing and thinking, one should diligently engage in meditation." This is what is said. Then, at the time of engaging in meditation, by completely abandoning mixing with non-virtuous things and conceptual thoughts, the body and mind will be gathered together. In this way, gathering the body and mind will also become content and have few desires, and not be greedy and discontent. That is to say, those who are greedy and discontent will not possess these two qualities of gathering the body and mind. Furthermore, there are two kinds of behaviors, namely, the behavior of attachment and the behavior of conceptual thought. Among them, for the behavior of attachment, one should first meditate on impurity in order to make the mind abide equally. For the behavior of conceptual thought, one should meditate on mindfulness of breathing in and out. That is to say, "The way to enter into it is through impurity or mindfulness of breathing in and out." This is what is said. Then, after having attained tranquility, one should meditate on the four mindfulnesses of body, feeling, mind, and phenomena. These meditations are to fully examine the specific and general characteristics. Among them, the specific characteristic is "capable of being form," and so on. The general characteristic is emptiness.

and egolessness, etc. That is, having attained tranquility, with body, feeling, mind, and dharma, by completely examining the two characteristics, one should meditate on mindfulness. Thus it is said. Thus, by training in the yoga of mindfulness of impurity and breathing in and out, those who possess the characteristics of their own nature will enter into this mindfulness, that is, the antidote to the perversion of perceiving impurity as pure. Then there is mindfulness of feelings, which is the antidote to the perversion of perceiving suffering as happiness. Then again there is mindfulness of mind, which is the antidote to the perversion of perceiving impermanence as permanence. Then after that there is mindfulness of dharma, which is the antidote to the perversion of perceiving selflessness as self by focusing on dharma such as faith, therefore it is the antidote to the four perversions, thus it is said. When one grasps one's own characteristics, it is called dharma, and focusing on the five aggregates is mindfulness of dharma, at that time, with mindfulness of dharma focusing on all dharmas, one meditates on all dharmas in the aspects of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Therefore, when mindfulness is placed on all dharmas, residing on all objects without exception, impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, that is seeing liberation. Thus it is said. Then, the noble path that will arise later, like the premonition of fire, like warmth arising before the fire of the rubbing stick, generates the part of discernment belonging to the heat. It focuses on the realm of the four truths in sixteen aspects. Then again it belongs to the peak, it is the same as that. Then also patience. Then from patience arises the supreme dharma of the world. These are the roots of virtue of the nature of meditating on the four parts of discernment. That is, thus the four parts of discernment, are said to be those who meditate on their own nature, this much is the path of joining. Beyond this, with the realization of the truths with sixteen moments in the realm of the four noble truths, only the realization of the uncontaminated arises. That is like this
