, and attachment to color and shape. The nine kinds of impurity as antidotes to this are as follows: The antidote for those attached to shape is the perception of swelling. The antidote for those attached to the touch of the body is the perception of being gnawed by worms. The antidote for those attached to the smell of the body is the perception of rotting. The antidote for those attached to the beauty of the body is the perception of being blood-red. The antidote for those attached to the color of the body is the perception of being bluish. The antidote for those attached to the fullness of the flesh is the perception of being eaten. The antidote for those attached to the playfulness of the body and limbs is the perception of being scattered. The antidote for those attached to the beauty of the teeth is the perception of a pile of bones. The antidote for those attached to color and shape is the perception of being burned. The antidote for distraction arising from hatred is the cultivation of loving-kindness. The antidote for distraction arising from ignorance is the cultivation of dependent origination. When the mind is seen to be displeased, one should contemplate the virtues of samadhi and the faults of displeasure, and thus pacify it. When the mind is seen to be drooping from sleep and drowsiness, one should cultivate the perception of light and attend to joy, attending to the virtues of the Buddha and so on, and thus pacify the drooping. Again, when the mind is seen to be intermittently agitated by remembering past laughter, play, and joy, one should attend to impermanence, and thus pacify the agitation. Again, when the mind is seen to be free from drooping and agitation, abiding in equanimity and abiding by its own nature, one should maintain equanimity by tightening and loosening. If the mind has already settled into equanimity, but one still tightens, then the mind will become distracted. Laziness and forgetting the object, as well as drooping, agitation, non-exertion, and exertion, all become faults of samadhi. Faith and other mind-states are their antidotes. In short, the faults of all samadhi are sixfold, namely laziness, forgetting the object, drooping, agitation, tightening, and non-tightening. For these, there are eight kinds of antidotal effort.

It should be cultivated, as the Blessed One said. That is to say, faith, desire, diligence, extreme practice, mindfulness, vigilance, equanimity, and attention. Among these, the first four are the antidotes to laziness. That is, faith, which has the characteristic of deeply believing in the qualities of samadhi, will cause yogis to generate a mind of desiring it manifestly. From manifest desire, diligence will be initiated. From that, the very ability of body and mind will be attained. From extreme practice, body and mind will turn away from laziness. Therefore, in order to abandon laziness, faith and so on should be cultivated. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of focus. Vigilance is the antidote to sinking and excitement, because it knows sinking and excitement. When sinking and excitement have not subsided, not making effort is a mistake, therefore attention should be cultivated as an antidote. When sinking and excitement have become nearly pacified, and when the mind runs continuously by its own power, making effort is a mistake, therefore equanimity should be cultivated as an antidote. The samadhi that is perfectly endowed with these eight abandonments will become supremely workable in perfecting the qualities such as miraculous powers. Therefore, it is said in the sutras that the foundation of miraculous powers endowed with eight abandonments should be cultivated. Understanding from this very order of cultivation, it is said in the Blessed One Mother Sutra: Here, the mind should be placed evenly, placed correctly, placed well, placed closely, tamed, pacified, nearly pacified, made one, made samadhi. Placing correctly is to make the object of focus continue uninterruptedly. Placing well is to know distraction and make it nearly pacified. Placing closely is to make distraction nearly pacified, and then go further and further upon it. Taming is to generate joy. Pacifying is to make displeasure nearly pacified. Nearly
