Because he tames, he is called the unsurpassed tamer of beings. This shows that he perfectly benefits others. Because he is suitable to be tamed and is able to tame, he is the tamer, that is, he himself is the one being tamed. He is the tamer of beings. Taming them is to turn them away from the wrong path and lead them into the right path, and to generate differences in qualities, just like taming horses and so on. Saying "unsurpassed" is to show that even the difficult to tame, those with strong desire, hatred, ignorance, and pride, such as the noble Delightful Beauty, Angulimala, Utpalavarna, Kashyapa, and the great king Kapila, can also be tamed. Being called the teacher of gods and humans shows how he perfectly benefits others. Because he is a teacher, he is a teacher, and when he teaches, he understands the four noble truths. Therefore, gods and humans are mentioned, because only they have the fortune to understand. Because of the cause of showing the right path and so on, he is also the teacher of all, therefore he is called the teacher of all sentient beings. If one enters through realizing the noble truths, then just like riding a vehicle, wisdom and abandonment will become perfect. The perfection of wisdom and abandonment is called perfectly benefiting others. So, who is the one who possesses such perfect self and other benefit? Combined with "Thus Gone One, worthy, perfectly enlightened, like a king of precious jewel splendor," because he has extraordinary wisdom, he is called Buddha. Extraordinary wisdom has nine aspects: omniscient, knowing all aspects, knowing without effort, unobstructed knowledge, abandoning afflictive and cognitive obscurations along with their imprints, acting in all ways to benefit all sentient beings, perfect compassion, perfect inexhaustibility, and perfect incomparability. Or, because he completely understands all things in all aspects, he is Buddha.

It is called "present," referring to the present time. The future is also of the same nature. It is called "Buddha," like milk and firewood. (Question:) If so, then was the past not Buddha? (Answer:) No, because there is no past Buddha, and it has been shown that complete extinction is impossible, because as long as samsara exists, in every instant, wisdom pervades all things. Or, one who is fully endowed with all unsurpassed qualities is called Buddha, therefore there is no fault in this. Or, in order to generate special faith in the teacher, the Bhagavan. The perfection of emptiness shows the greatness of merit: Who can attain the two teachers? What are the paths of these two? Where do they reside? And explain what corresponds to them. To this, the two perfections of the teacher are: the nature of proclamation and the nature of realization. Among them, the nature of proclamation is: called "Tathagata," because he proclaimed the dharmas as they truly abide, therefore it is called "truly proclaimed." This shows that he is the teacher who truly proclaims the Dharma. The nature of realization is: the two natures of abandonment and perfect wisdom, which are called "Arhat" and "Perfectly Awakened Buddha" respectively. Therefore, the Bhagavan truly proclaims the Dharma, abandons all afflictions, and comprehends all dharmas, thereby fully revealing the teacher's unparalleled and perfect nature. For example, non-Buddhists do not have a teacher who truly proclaims the Dharma, because they have not abandoned all afflictions. Therefore, they are not true teachers. Although the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have abandoned all afflictions and are true teachers, they are not teachers of all aspects because they have not comprehended all dharmas. The Bhagavan is a true teacher and is the teacher of all aspects.

He is the teacher of all. The perfection of the teacher is indicated by "endowed with knowledge and conduct." What is the second kind of perfection of the teacher? It is indicated by "Sugata." Regarding this, by mentioning the three aspects such as "good," it should be explained as appropriate. The activities of the teacher's perfection are twofold: observing sentient beings who are fortunate and those who are not, which is indicated by "knower of the world." Taming those who are fortunate is indicated by "unsurpassed tamer of beings." Where does the activity of taming the fortunate reside? It is indicated by "teacher of gods and humans." Who is endowed with the perfection of the teacher? It is indicated by "Buddha Bhagavan." The meaning of the words has already been explained, so here it is just a simple combination. Showing the teacher through the gateway of complete liberation from suffering: By means of "Shariputra" and so on, the name, qualities, and definite time of complete liberation from suffering are divided into three aspects. Alas, even this Buddha Bhagavan, the basis of such qualities, is on the path of impermanence. What need is there to mention us? Thinking thus, it is for the sake of generating a special kind of weariness in beings. The term "life" should be understood as certainty or comprehension. If it is certain that the time for complete liberation from suffering has arrived, how can words such as "seventy thousand years" not become a fault? It is said: The life of the world is immeasurable. The great sage was born at that time. The time for complete liberation from suffering is like that. When the life of the world was immeasurable, there appeared a Bhagavan Tathagata like the King of Jewel Glory, therefore, in relation to that time, the time for his complete liberation from suffering also becomes long. Therefore, there is no fault in words such as "seventy thousand years." Showing the lineage of those who have attained dharani is done in five ways: name and king.
