He is called the Victorious One because he is victorious over all places. Praising the Victorious One is for the sake of completely abandoning faults such as clamor, and for the sake of being the cause of the arising of qualities. One should practice, and by the power of practice, one should examine the examples. If one thinks, "I am dwelling in a solitary place," and so forth, and develops pride, then one dwelling in a solitary place should not despise others. If so, then that solitary place is praised by the Victorious One; if not, then that solitary place is only condemned by the Victorious One. Thus, dwell in a solitary place praised by the Victorious One! This is called the reason. Not despising others by dwelling there is the vow. The so-called profound Dharma should be connected with what is praised by the Victorious One, and what is praised by the Victorious One itself is for the sake of enduring the profound Dharma as it is taught. If not, then it will only become a wrong view. Therefore, generating the desire to endure the profound Dharma is the vow. What is praised by the Sugata is the reason. If one generates the desire to endure the profound Dharma, then what should one do? Dwell in mindfulness as if one's head is on fire! It is said. Saying "as if one's head is on fire" is to closely represent having diligence. For example, if one's head is on fire, one would extinguish the fire from one's head with great effort, similarly, one should have diligence. The so-called mindfulness indicates this: abandoning attachment, hatred, ignorance, and laziness, and dwelling in non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, and having diligence. These four dharmas are called mindfulness. Thus, being the basis for hypocrisy! This is called the reason. Do not abide in gains and honor. This is called the vow. Mentioning gains includes material possessions, respect, praise, and wrong livelihood, and so forth. Mentioning hypocrisy is to closely express, and also includes flattery and so forth. Abiding means particularly clinging. Then how should one live? One should be content with meager things! This is what is said. Whether it is grass, leaves, water, or whatever one obtains, one should be content.

It is so. How can one live like that? Like a bird, it is said. What merit can be obtained by such intense asceticism? One should have the fruit of being born as a human. It is said, this shows the benefit. In order to obtain benefit and eliminate harm, one should have the fruit of being born as a human. Alas! Well attained is the Buddha's teaching. It is said, this shows the attainment of benefit. Abandon even the home, the root of many sufferings. This shows the elimination of harm. Alas! This is a word of wonder, to be combined with well attained. Because in samsara, obtaining an unfamiliar dharma, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, is extremely difficult to obtain. Alas! Well attained. It is said. Also, because it is difficult to abandon the attachment born from beginningless samsara. Alas! Abandoned. It is said. This teaching of the Buddha is renunciation. Well attained is beautifully attained. Because it is the cause of all perfect qualities, and for higher advancement and definite guidance, and because it is unfamiliar in samsara. Or, obtaining non-retrogression is well attained, because one does not regress in other lifetimes, because one inclines towards nirvana. Or, because of obtaining complete perfection, it is well attained, because it has not been harmed by the conceptualizations of desire, etc. The root of many sufferings is the root of sufferings such as accomplishing and protecting, and separating from the beloved and encountering the unloved. The cause of well attaining the Buddha's teaching is abandoning the home. The word "householder" means to indicate being close to living in a solitary place, because even in monasteries, etc., there can be faults of the home. The cause of abandoning the home is the root of many sufferings. Because of well attaining the Buddha's teaching, and abandoning the home, the root of many sufferings, therefore, with body, speech, and mind completely pure, you should respect the Buddha and the Dharma. Speech being pure is the virtuous deeds of speech, etc.
