Therefore, that was said. Saying "that was said" means that words were spoken. If one can practice yoga on each and every letter, that would be excellent. If not, then one must strive to practice on each and every word. For example: This secret mantra without yoga, will not reveal its fruit. The words of a secret mantra are the secret mantra itself, therefore, do not be without yoga. The meaning of this is merely expressive. Because they are the words of the secret mantra of the meaning of the dharani, therefore they are the words of the secret mantra of the dharani. Now, the nature of dharani will be explained: The name that is spoken is establishment, the method of attainment is demonstration, and with words such as 'that which is to be known,' the dharani itself will appear later. Because the Bhagavan established the name of the recollection of the Buddha with words such as, "This is Shariputra, the bodhisattva mahasattva who enters into non-apprehension of all dharmas," and because from then on, the Bhagavan demonstrated the method of attainment with words such as "again," and because he accomplished this dharani that accomplishes limitless doors, therefore, I hold that the recollection of the Buddha that appears later is the dharani itself. If it were not so, and the letters of the secret mantra were the dharani itself, then this would not be reasonable, because it would be out of place, because it is interrupted by the occasion of demonstrating the recollection of the Buddha, and because the letters of the secret mantra are the essence of letters and the nature of sound, therefore they must be apprehended by eye consciousness and ear consciousness. Therefore, saying "this" is not the meaning of what is said, but keeping in mind the connection that will appear later, "this" was said. Apprehension here is understood from the meaning, arrogance is manifest attachment, because it is invisible, therefore it does not exist. Apprehension here is understood from the meaning, but not from the letters, because by apprehending the letters one cannot obtain these benefits. Arrogance is manifest attachment, and if that is the case, it will become like this: Not being arrogant towards conditioned and unconditioned dharmas is manifestation.

The term means not to be attached. Why not be attached? Therefore, it is said not to be mindful. Also, because of the lack of inherent existence, one should definitely understand that one should not be conceited about conditioned and unconditioned dharmas as having inherent existence. Unpleasant, neither, and pleasant. Pleasant is also considered twofold. All dharmas are categorized into four by the Able One (Buddha). The four dharmas are the nature of unpleasantness, the nature of neither, and the nature of pleasantness. These are also twofold by the distinction of being with and without outflows, therefore they become fourfold. If asked why the dharmas are shown as fourfold, the answer is: because harmful thoughts, ignorance, desire, etc., arise from that door. In order to accomplish the method of abandonment, these things are shown to be without inherent existence. Aversion arises from unpleasantness, ignorance arises from all three things, and the root of samsara is desire, etc. Therefore, in order to show the method of abandoning them, these three things are shown to be without inherent existence. As it is said in the sutras: 'He does not truly see the dharmas to which he is attached,' and so on. Because one is not conceited about conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, one should not reproach unpleasant things, that is, one should not belittle them. One should not abandon intermediate things, because they are not objects of attachment and aversion, so they are things to be abandoned. One should not grasp pleasant things, because grasping as 'mine' with existence is grasping. One should not strive for pleasant things without outflows, because these are to be accomplished with great manifest exertion, so they are to be strived for. Here, what is to be obtained is what can be obtained, these are what are to be cultivated, what is to be abandoned is abandonment, and everything is increase. Whatever is appropriate to be obtained is what is to be obtained. These are also dharmas without outflows and dharmas with outflows.
