The absence of arising wisdom is ignorance. By closely associating with ignorance, strong hatred arises as a result of ignorance. As a result of hatred, strong attachment arises from the nature of desire in the three realms. This attachment leads to repeated rebirths in hell, as animals, and as hungry ghosts. These are the three inner poisons. The three outer poisons are lingering poisons, such as aconite poison and other poisons that can cause death, fainting, madness, ulceration, blisters, blindness, speechlessness, deafness, and stiffness. The moving poisons are thoughts, touch, and breath. These can cause imbalances in the four humors: wind, phlegm, bile, and blood. Poisons with substance are touch, breath, and tooth poison. These can also cause death, aging, stiffness, blisters, speechlessness, blindness, deafness, body stiffness, and so on. Poisons without substance are the poisons of thought and sight. The harm caused by thought can be transmitted even from a distance of eighty thousand leagues. The poison of sight can be seen from a distance of five yojanas. These two poisons also have the nature of wind, phlegm, bile, and blood, and can cause eighteen different Yang diseases and leprosy. These diseases include scabies, itching, leprosy, cataracts, ringworm, boils, abscesses, ascites, blisters, smallpox, vitiligo, furuncles, swelling, lung disease, tuberculosis, body odor, pterygium, pannus, scrofula, etc. These can all cause those diseases. Other diseases, such as headaches, and twenty-four other different diseases can also be caused. The same is true for epidemics. These poisons can also cause death, ulceration, stiffness, blindness, speechlessness, deafness, lameness, and other severe physical illnesses. Those with the poison of thought and the poison of sight can spread the poison for up to seven years. This is poison without substance. The poisons that act are external black poison, precious earth poison, poison derived from nectar, and so on.
