The phrase "cutting down trees for heating" refers to: The bhikkhu Sari went to the monastery's heating room to play because he didn't know anything. The phrase "a large black snake emerged from a rotten tree stump" refers to: Due to the relaxation of discipline, the result is having fangs with venom, belonging to the evil Naga race, possessing four types of poison, having the form of a black snake, having visible poison in the eyes, having poison of intention, and having poison of touch, thus possessing four types of poison and four races. When does this occur? When there is relaxation and abandonment of personal actions and intentions, the Naga race can also sense it. The race is Brahmin, and the evil moment also arises at that time, and the poison also arises at that time. This is called the poison of intention. Visible poison is seeing relaxation, individuals, and the possessions of individuals. Just seeing it causes anger, and just seeing it turns to ashes. The evil moment is also at that time, and its race is Kshatriya. The poison of touch is touching just by seeing it, and that is the poison of the fangs. The race is Vaishya. The poison of breath arises from intention, seeing, and touching. Just abandoning intention also produces the poison of breath, and seeing is the same. What more to say about touching? The poison of breath is different from others. Untamed, belonging to an evil race. The poison of breath is called black poison. Its race is the black snake. Emerging from the cut-down tree, it is terrifying, possessing the nature of four types of poison. The bhikkhu Sari encountered this. The phrase "biting the right big toe" refers to: The untamed black snake bit the bhikkhu Sari, who had relaxed his discipline, and was bitten by the poison of the fangs. That was a sudden relaxation. The phrase "the body became numb and collapsed" refers to: The power of the poison caused the complexion to turn pale, the whole body to swell, there was no memory in the mind, and heavy breaths were exhaled from the mouth. The bhikkhu Sari was also struck by a great illness and tormented by great suffering. The phrase "vomiting on the head, eyes rolling back, lying there" refers to being struck by the poison of the fangs, the moment of death arriving, eyes rolling back, and the tongue becoming stiff.

Thus I have heard. The venerable Ānanda is one who is great in loving-kindness and compassion, and greatly learned, who has compassion for all sentient beings, who does not transgress the Buddha's teachings, who serves the Arhats through discipline, and who abides in the precepts. Ānanda, who is endowed with compassion, saw a monk afflicted by illness. Having seen this, he quickly went to the Blessed One, because he saw (a monk) seized by a black snake, and unable to find a method, he went before the Blessed One to seek a method. To prostrate with his head at the feet of the Blessed One, this is because the monk was compassionate and respectfully prostrated to the Blessed One. After circumambulating three times, (he) faced the Blessed One. He sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, (he was) in the midst of the Bodhisattvas, Śrāvakas, Bhikṣus, Bhikṣuṇīs, Upāsakas, Upāsikās, gods and humans, etc., before the Blessed One. The venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One, this was to request the Blessed One for the sake of the monk Śāri. "Venerable Blessed One," refers to one who is virtuous by nature, that is, one whose body, speech, and mind are tamed, who has abandoned the ten non-virtuous actions and undertakes the ten virtuous actions, and who has naturally renounced for the benefit of sentient beings. Similarly, compassion pervades the sentient beings of the three-thousand great-thousand world system. The Blessed One is one who has overcome ignorance, hatred, desire, miserliness, jealousy, etc., and who has turned away from Saṃsāra. Or it is one who has overcome the obscurations to knowledge caused by habitual tendencies. Endowed means possessing good fortune. Passed away means liberated from Saṃsāra and Nirvāṇa. In Śrāvastī, this refers to the country of Magadha. The Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, the Anāthapiṇḍada's Garden, refers to the place where Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Śrāvaka Arhats, Bhikṣus, Bhikṣuṇīs, Upāsakas and Upāsikās, etc., reside, or a place cherished by accomplishments. The monk Śāri refers to one who is called from the Brahmin caste, and Bhikṣu is also the name of ordination.
