The phrase "Taking refuge in the perfectly enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni" means to respect the sacred Dharma and the knowledge of mantras. Following without wavering, everything becomes empty. This is because of not lying and not deceiving sentient beings, appearing as the nature of emptiness. Then, in just a moment, all the many spirits gather. This means that the spirits appearing in various forms are also drawn by the wisdom lasso of the knowledge mantra, appearing in the four directions. Mountains and cliffs, oceans and lakes, this means that the dwelling place of the spirits is endowed with these. Streams and rivers, puddles, and whatever dwells in the depths, this means that they dwell in places endowed with these, harming sentient beings. Gardens and immeasurable palaces, pleasure groves and forests, this means that the spirits do not dwell in one place, but appear in various forms. Stupa places and village places, and under trees, whatever dwells, this means that they dwell in that place and wander in the world. City gates and villages, city ruins and regions, this means that one type of spirit wanders in villages and cities, seeking opportunities to harm sentient beings. The gates of the king's palace, and those dwelling in the immeasurable palace, this means that there is also a type of spirit that harms the king, waiting for opportunities in that place. Mandalas and cemeteries, and temples as well, this means that one type of spirit clings to dilapidated temples, hindering virtuous deeds. Boundaries and gambling places, empty houses and sandy grounds, this means that they dwell in places endowed with these, appearing in different forms. All the Yakshas above and below, and from the four directions and corners, this means that possessing those Yakshas, they dwell in the eight directions. The thousands upon thousands of Yakshas are all hooked by the lasso of the knowledge mantra.
