Furthermore, if one is free from conceptualizations and afflictions such as desire, then demons and the like will not fear this place. Therefore, it is said: "At that time, it is pure, all faults are completely abandoned, because of seeing the cause of enlightenment, thus it is called teaching." Thus it is said. From "Besides that, practice at other times" to "Purify with the mind of enlightenment," even when purifying the external lands, if one does not possess the mind of enlightenment and abides in conceptualization, then the purification will not be effective. "Besides that" refers to places other than where one is purifying, i.e., the external land. "The mantra practitioner dwells in conceptualization" means that one believes that the aggregates, elements, sense bases, etc., are real. If one believes that the land to be purified and the faults of bones, etc., are also real, and practices on that land, then because one does not possess the mind of enlightenment, it will not become pure. Therefore, having abandoned all conceptualizations, one should purify all lands. What I have taught extensively about the rituals of mandalas, the first thing taught is this. Thus it is said. Meditating on the mind of enlightenment beforehand is also because among the many characteristics of a teacher, it is said, "Always skilled in the ways of the Prajnaparamita, knowing the differences of the three vehicles," and so on. Being skilled in the ways of the Prajnaparamita means being skilled in the nature of emptiness, therefore one should know to meditate on the mind of enlightenment beforehand. Knowing the differences of the three vehicles also indicates being skilled in emptiness, because one is skilled in the differences between the selflessness of persons and phenomena. All these activities of the mandala should be performed by a teacher who possesses such characteristics and has accomplished the activities, so one should not merely abide in conceptualization, but possess the mind of enlightenment, so as to combine with the minds of sentient beings. Therefore, the intention of the Bhagavan, who extensively explained the purification of external lands, is not understood by the ignorant. If one cannot abandon such conceptualizations, then one will not become the cause of the Buddha and the all-knowing wisdom. Therefore, it is said: "In this world, Buddhas ripen." Thus and so on.

To the disciples diligently, it is the practice of bodhicitta. That is, the practice of aspiring bodhicitta and entering bodhicitta. If entering bodhicitta is practiced first, then it is considered practiced, therefore, later when entering the mandala, aspiring bodhicitta should be given. These two are the purification of the ground. If entering bodhicitta has not been accustomed to beforehand, then when entering the mandala, aspiring bodhicitta is given, and later he is made to practice entering bodhicitta, this is the practice of bodhicitta for the disciples. Protection is done by the immovable protector or, the Victorious One of the Three Realms. This speaks of the protection for the disciples, the protection when the disciples first come in, and the protection when they are especially abiding, etc., all of these are protected by either of these two. When a disciple, with an object of focus, will never waver, at that time, like the stainless sky, he will become truly pure. This speaks of the characteristics of a disciple's purity, that is, when that disciple abides in yoga, his samadhi is pure, he has abandoned conceptualization, and is free from characteristics, he does not waver with regard to both virtue and non-virtue, and even after rising from yoga, he practices virtuous deeds such as offerings, and does not waver with regard to the objects of desire, etc., that is the characteristic of purity. At that time, like the stainless sky, just as the sky is not contained by anything, therefore it is naturally clear, and even if it is obscured by sudden clouds, etc., the sky will not degenerate from its naturally pure state. This (disciple) also, when abiding in samadhi, is without the two stains of virtue and non-virtue, etc., and when rising from samadhi, even if he performs actions such as offerings, he knows them to be of the nature of illusion, etc., because he is not stained by the stain of conceiving things as existent. The first empowerment of the ground, it is said, is to be done by the perfect Buddha. The second is by the power of mind, here it is not to be done by others. This is to say, previously, when the ground was completely taken with great compassion, it was purified by the mandala.

There, contemplating the five Buddhas and so on, what was said is discussed here, and explained in order, that is: first, on the ground of the mandala, contemplate the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, there, and bless them. After that, hold yourself in between with your mind. After that, protect with mantras, these three completely hold, there is nothing else besides that. Explaining the four threads. From "the fifth is explained as like the sky" to "between", it is said that previously the five-colored threads were generally explained, now it is clearly stated what the five colors are respectively. After grasping in the space, examine the mandala there. This is to say that the previous mandala only generally said to grasp the thread directly in front of the center, but it did not say to draw the mandala there, now it clearly says to grasp the thread in the space, and draw the mandala in the space. With the second thread, place the mandala on the ground. This is to say that previously it was generally said to pick up the second thread and face east, etc., but it did not explain in detail where the mandala should be drawn, now it clearly says that after drawing in the space, draw the mandala on the ground with the second thread that was picked up. All the Buddhas are, the seats of their sons, the wise ones, are the supreme born of the lotus, auspicious praised by the worlds. This is to say that the seat is made of white lotus. The supreme mind-born. This is to say that previously, when explaining the four branches of recitation, it was said to contemplate a white lotus in the heart, here it says white lotus, and says mind-born lotus, then where should it be done like the white lotus contemplated by the mind? Pratyekabuddhas and Arhats, whoever is famous for knowing one direction, their seats should be known, are petals born of the lotus. This is to say that the seats of those who have the same direction of wisdom as the Hearers and Buddhas should be made on one petal of the white lotus. All the gods of the world, from to the kings who are extremely praised, the gods of the world, such as Brahma and other king-like figures, because they have desire, so it is said to be the white lotus of the seat.
