The order of completely eliminating the one hundred and sixty kinds of afflictions, etc. Now, I will explain the order of entering the ground of practice, where Bodhisattvas who practice through the gate of mantra, who travel the Great Vehicle path, who do not rely on others, and who are sharp in wisdom, meditate on the absence of self in both phenomena and individuals, and engage with faith and understanding. Among them, the master of those who eliminate, those who travel the Great Vehicle path and do not rely on others, generate the mind of no-self in phenomena. This refers to Bodhisattvas who have entered the Great Vehicle, who have heard extensively, whose wisdom is extremely sharp, who do not rely on others, and who understand the characteristics of phenomena as illusion and mirage through their own intelligence, and thus realize the absence of self in phenomena. Among these, the order of realizing the absence of self in individuals requires the passage of three kalpas. Even if one realizes the absence of self in individuals, it is still necessary to abandon the perception that only aggregates exist for one kalpa. If these tasks are not accomplished, how can one realize the absence of self in phenomena? The answer is: Why is that? It is because they have previously engaged in practice, and when the place of the aggregates is completely destroyed, in order to fully understand the essence, they have generated perceptions like illusion, mirage, reflection, echo, fire wheel, and Gandharva city. This means that having previously engaged in practice, when the place of the aggregates is completely destroyed, such as illusion and mirage, one first strives with faith and engages in practice. When practicing, one understands the nature of the aggregates as illusion, etc., and comprehends that even without practicing the order of realizing the absence of self in individuals, one can realize the absence of self in phenomena. Among these, illusion refers to generating the perception that all phenomena are like illusions. For example, the woolly yak and horse, etc., created by a magician, although made of stone and wood, etc., do not appear as stone and wood, but appear as the forms of woolly yak and horse, etc. However, in reality, there are no such things as woolly yak and horse, etc., but only stone and wood. Similarly, although phenomena such as aggregates appear, they actually appear due to the power of mistaken consciousness. In reality, the nature of phenomena is similar to the woolly yak created by a magician; although it appears, it does not exist.

Yes. Consciousness is like stones and trees, etc. Although it does not appear, the phenomena that appear as form, etc., are not existent, but are merely the appearance of the illusion of consciousness. Similarly, in the wilderness, a person tormented by thirst sees a mirage as water, but the substance of water does not exist, it is merely a mirage. Similarly, the aggregates and other phenomena are also not existent, but are merely the appearance of the illusion of consciousness. Similarly, images, echoes, rotating torches, and cities of gandharvas should also be understood in the manner described above regarding illusion, etc. In short, the appearance of the aggregates and other phenomena is merely the appearance of the illusion of consciousness. In a dream, although there are no objects such as form, one sees forms, etc., and performs those actions. In a dream, it is clearly evident that forms, etc., do not exist. All of these are merely due to the power of consciousness. Thinking, "Just like that," one enters the stage of practice by faith, and realizing the selflessness of phenomena such as the aggregates, a conception arises like illusions, etc., and even cities of gandharvas. Although phenomena are not truly existent, one clings to the mere existence of consciousness. In this way, realizing the selflessness of phenomena on the stage of practice by faith, similarly, for the practitioner on the stage of practice by faith, the mind that phenomena arise and cease like illusions and mirages, etc., and the mind that, having analyzed phenomena in this way, abides in the non-conceptual samadhi of that, and then, driven by compassion, practices the perfections, etc., and through the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating, understands the qualities of the ten bhumis, etc., and generates great faith in them, and the three minds of entering, abiding, and arising, through cultivation, one does not fully understand the qualities of the bhumis and perfections, etc., that is, one does not fully understand and has not realized them. Through the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating, one realizes the selflessness of phenomena and clings to the mere existence of consciousness. This is the characteristic of the stage of practice by faith. That stage of practice by faith lasts for one great kalpa.
