Then, how does the example of the mind clinging to both extremes, like holding the two feet with iron chains, apply? In Indian language, the foot is called "Pāda" (Sanskrit Devanagari: पाद, Sanskrit Romanization: pāda, literal Chinese meaning: foot), and the word is also called "Pāda" (Sanskrit Devanagari: पाद, Sanskrit Romanization: pāda, literal Chinese meaning: foot), which is the same. What is the mind of a cloud? "Whatever thinks of water" is like the mind of a cloud. Clouds gather water and perform the function of water. Similarly, the mind also relies on the dharma of performing the function of water. What is the mind of a field? "Completely taming one's own body" is like the mind of a field. The field performs the work of plowing and other care in order to grow grains and so on. Similarly, the mind also adorns its own body with bathing and anointing, as well as ornaments, in order to make its body beautiful, and relies on such dharma. What is the mind of salt? "Whatever is thought of with something, also thinks of that" is like the mind of salt. When salt is placed in a container such as a bottle, the container is also eaten away by the salt and becomes empty, turning into a crack and the taste of salt. Similarly, the mind also focuses on and thinks about whatever object it focuses on. The very mind that thinks, in the part of the next moment, is destroyed and disappears by the thought, relying on such dharma. What is the mind of a razor? "Whatever relies only on ordination" is like the mind of a razor. The razor only performs the act of shaving the hair of the ordained, and does not make efforts other than ordination. Similarly, the mind also ordains, and after shaving the hair, it only abides in ordination, without making efforts to learn the precepts of ordination, keeping the precepts, and so on. What is the mind like Mount Meru? "Whatever becomes high and thinks" is like the mind of Mount Meru. Mount Meru is high and towering upwards for eighty thousand yojanas. Similarly, the mind also thinks that its own qualities are completely superior, and becomes arrogant and great, relying on such dharma. What is the mind like the ocean? "Whatever highly clings to and abides in its own body" is like the mind of the ocean. The ocean caresses and touches itself with its own waves.

Therefore, the mind also considers its own body to be impermanent and empty, and so on. What is a mind like a cave? It is said that "whatever was previously determined, relies on itself to transform," this is the mind like a cave. The cave has a small entrance, but the inside of the cave becomes much larger than the entrance in many ways. Similarly, the mind was previously established in a state of possessing discipline and merit, but it becomes arrogant because of that discipline and merit, and based on that, it generates pride and transforms. So, what is the mind of becoming? It is said that "whatever mind arises with, it goes together with it," this is the mind of the nature of becoming. Because there are habits from previously engaging in either virtue or non-virtue, wherever one is born, one is born together with that habit. Or, having obtained a different birth as the ripening fruit of whatever previous virtuous or non-virtuous actions, one is born together with that kind of birth. For example, if in a previous life one was accustomed to and frequently engaged in killing, in the next life one will have many illnesses and a short life. Similarly, one should apply this analogously to virtuous deeds as well. Regarding "One hundred and sixty worldly minds, after three eons, the supramundane mind arises," the supramundane mind is also of two types: the uncontaminated mind that realizes the selflessness of persons, which is the mind with aspects; and the uncontaminated mind that realizes the selflessness of phenomena, which is the mind without aspects, naturally luminous. So, in this context, is the supramundane wisdom knowable by people? Those speculators cannot know it, therefore it is said: "All speculation is difficult to know." This was previously taught by the Buddhas. "Previously taught by the Buddhas" means that if even speculators cannot know it, then who can know it? It is not the domain of speculators, but the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, know and declare it. "Buddhas previously" means that it is not only spoken now, but the previous Buddhas also knew and spoke in this way.
