It descends neither too high nor too low, like the conduct of the center. Similarly, the mind also practices the Dharma of abandoning the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Just as a river flows relying on both banks, the mind also clings to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, and one should also practice its Dharma. What is the mind of a trough? It is said to rely on existence; this is the mind like a trough. A trough does not leak anything from itself for water, etc., flowing from elsewhere. Similarly, the mind also collects everything from others and practices the Dharma of not letting anything out from itself. What is the mind of a well? It is said to regard what is not deep as deep; this is the mind like a well. A well filled with water, though not deep, is like a deep well because its depth cannot be measured. Similarly, the mind also practices the Dharma of regarding non-profound wisdom as profound. What is the mind of universal protection? It is said to think that only this is the truth and others are foolish; this is the mind that is protected. Thinking that the happiness one has heard and received is true and not mistaken, one firmly holds onto it, thinking that what others have received and understood is not so, and thus practices this Dharma. What is the mind of stinginess? It is said to practice only for oneself and not give to others; this refers to the mind of a miser, as its name suggests. What is the mind of a mouse? It is said to rely on offerings and practice; this is the mind like a mouse. When mice, etc., grab food, they offer and grab. Similarly, the mind also increases from the time of entering in order to obtain the noble path, etc., increasing in order. What is the mind of a dog? It is said to be content even when young; this is the mind like a dog. A dog is content even when young. Similarly, the mind also practices the Dharma of being content with anything small. What is the mind of a garuda? It is said to rely on the Dharma by clinging to one side; this is the mind like a garuda. When a garuda grabs a naga, etc., it flaps its wings and grabs. Similarly, the mind also practices the Dharma of clinging to whatever belongs to oneself. Like a garuda flapping its wings and grabbing a snake.
