That mind also approaches the Dharma of great enjoyment, hence it is called the mind like a Naga. What is the mind of a human? Thinking about its meaning, it is said that the enjoyment of humans approaches the Dharma of desirable qualities. What is the mind of a woman? Approaching that Dharma for the sake of desire, it is said to be like the mind of a woman, because a woman, being the object of desire, performs the actions of those Dharmas in order to obtain them. Likewise, that mind also approaches those Dharmas in order to obtain the objects of desire. What is the mind of a lord? "Whatever I think," it is said to be like the mind of a lord. "I think that I will cause all the worlds of the lord to arise and cease." Likewise, that mind also approaches the Dharma of thinking, "Even those things I have not done, I have done." A lord refers to a great god. What is the mind of a merchant? Approaching the Dharma of gathering and then separately exchanging, it is said to be like the mind of a merchant. A merchant gathers all the Dharmas of buying and selling when the price is low, and then when the price is high, he exchanges and sells all those expensive things again. Likewise, that mind also approaches the Dharma of how to abandon the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and the Dharmas of impermanence and suffering, etc., as is appropriate. What is the mind of a farmer? Seeking much learning and then approaching it later, it is said to be like the mind of a farmer. First gathering the crops from the fields, and then later using those crops from the fields for eating, drinking, and so on. Likewise, that mind also first hears many Dharmas, accumulates them, and then later approaches the Dharmas of thinking, meditating, and so on, according to the Dharmas it has heard. What is the mind of a river? Approaching without contemplating the two extremes, it is said to be like the mind of a river. A river does not rise to the two extremes, but flows like the middle course. Likewise, that mind also approaches the Dharma of abandoning the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Or, just as a river contemplates the two extremes and flows, likewise, that mind also grasps the extremes of permanence and annihilation and approaches that Dharma.

Furthermore, it should be done like this. What is the mind of a lake? It is said to be close to oneself. This is a mind like a lake. That lake accumulates water flowing from other places and does not leak anything from itself. Similarly, this mind also collects everything from others and does not release anything from itself, it is close to such a Dharma. What is a mind like a pond? It is said to know depth from what is not deep. This is a mind like a pond. A pond filled with water, though not deep, appears deep because its bottom is not visible. Similarly, this mind also considers what is not profound wisdom to be profound, it is close to such a Dharma. What is a guarding mind? It is said, "This is true, and the rest is ignorance." This is the mind that has become a guard. Thinking, "What I have heard and understood is exactly without error," it firmly grasps it, thinking that what others have understood and contemplated is not true, it is close to such a Dharma. What is a miserly mind? It is said to be close to oneself and not release it to others. This refers to the mind of a miser, as it is said. What is the mind of a cat? It is said to be looking for an opportunity to leap. This is a mind like a cat. Cats catch mice, etc., leaping and catching by leaping. Similarly, if this mind wants to attain the noble path, etc., it will also have a gradual leap at the time of entering, it is leaping according to that order. What is the mind of a dog? It is said to be content even in childhood. This is a mind like a dog, a dog is content even in childhood. Similarly, this mind is content with any small thing, it is close to such a Dharma. What is the mind of a Garuda? It is said to be close to the Dharma that has become a refuge. This is a mind like a Garuda. The Garuda grabs dragons, etc., and grabs them by flapping its wings. Similarly, this mind, whatever belongs to it, is close to holding one side. If it is said that the Garuda grabs the dragon by flapping its wings, how can this be an example of holding one side? In the language of India, a wing is called Paksha (Sanskrit Devanagari: पक्षा, Sanskrit Romanization: pakṣa, Chinese literal meaning: wing), and direction is also called Paksha (Sanskrit Devanagari: पक्षा, Sanskrit Romanization: pakṣa, Chinese literal meaning: direction). Therefore, from the system of language, one word also has multiple meanings, the Garuda grabs the dragon because it wants to take it as its own. Becoming one side is also holding one side for the purpose of possessing something.
