Also, because they perceive those as being real. Secret Lord, "like that, etc.," refers to the things of self mentioned above. "For the sake of hoping for liberation" means hoping for liberation by relying on clinging to things as self in that way. "Those who desire to unite through union" refers to the worldly way of preventing the body, speech, and mind from engaging with objects, and focusing the mind on one object or abiding on whatever object is focused upon; this is union, that is, the union of preventing the body, speech, and mind from engaging with objects. Those who desire to unite refer to discriminating such selves. "Individual childish beings are like animals" refers to not understanding one's own tradition. "Like animals" is a metaphor for speaking evil, thinking evil, and doing evil. Animals have no other thoughts than eating, drinking, lust, and fear. Children also possess such characteristics, so they are said to be like animals. "If some" means that if such childish beings, like animals, wander in samsara, the arising of the perception of Dharma is extremely rare and excellent. The arising of the perception of Dharma refers to fasting and becoming meritorious. Merely fasting is enough to satisfy the mind, and one becomes accustomed to fasting itself again and again at the appropriate times. Therefore, it is said like this, starting from fasting, merely that is enough to give rise to a satisfied mind, therefore one should become accustomed to those. Secret Lord, that is born from virtue, so it is the first mind, becoming a seed, refers to the mind, in the seventh life, guarding morality, becoming a seed born from virtue. Some people have doubts about this: fasting is a characteristic of asceticism, it is one aspect of affliction, how can it become a seed of virtue? To dispel this doubt, after fasting, the mind of offering and giving arises. Fasting is the immediate cause of generosity and other virtuous deeds, so there is no fault. Those acts of generosity and so on also refer to virtuous deeds with outflows. The reason for this is generosity, because it possesses signs and union.
