What are these? For the sake of practitioners, masters, and disciples who delight in great prosperity, the mandala of the Bhagavan All-Knowing Wisdom, which is established in the root tantra, is the root mandala, the first. For disciples who have weak faith, are not skilled in making, or have little wealth, the second mandala called Vajra Top is taught. For the sake of averting death arising from maturation and untimely death, a mandala other than the first two, called Amitayus Arising, is taught. Then, for those who abandon jewel-like faith and take fly-dung-like wealth, the six mandalas of worldly deities are taught. The first of these is the mandala of the Four Great Kings. Then the mandala of the Guardians of the Directions. Then the mandala of the Great Planets. Then the mandala of the Great Nagas. Then the mandala of the Great Terrifier. Then the mandala of the Great Gods. Then there are three transcendental mandalas. For those who wish to be liberated from death arising from karma and maturation, or untimely death, and who have faith in the Sugata Amitayus, the second Amitayus Arising, the mandala presided over by the Tathagata, is taught. These are the nine mandalas that belong to the later tantra. Then, in order to explain the remaining rituals not taught in the root and later tantras, in the later part of the later tantra, the four supreme mandalas, with Samantabhadra and others as the chief, which gather the nature of all families, and the Khorawo mandala, which is extremely terrifying, the Sun, Fire, and Vajra mandala, these two are taught. Some say that the order of these twelve mandalas must be clearly stated, and that the practice of establishing the six worldly mandalas must also be stated before the three transcendental mandalas. They say this because the great mandala here is the root mandala, so it should be explained first, and for those of weak ability, the man-

Gathering a vast retinue and establishing a mandala is Vajraśekhara. As for the remaining ten mandalas, there is no harm in establishing them in this way, and the reason for the definite order is their nature. If someone asks, "Why are the worldly mandalas mentioned first?" it is because those people have the thought of belittling mantras. Otherwise, what harm is there in establishing these as transcendental? Furthermore, there is no end to such questions. For example, why are the mandalas of the three names not established here, and so on? If these deities have other mantras and mudras, why are only these shown? And so on, these will become grounds for criticism. Therefore, that should be regarded as a meaningless and futile conceptualization. If someone is able to establish a definitive proof, who can stop them? It depends on the speaker. Now, the deities will be described. In the center of the root mandala, on top of a lion facing outwards, is the lotus king, with various petals emerging from the ground in the center of the lion, covering the lions, and a five-pointed vajra extending from between the petals. In the center of the great moon mandala is the venerable Sarvavid, facing in all directions, with a white body, holding the meditation mudra, bearing the mark of an eight-spoked wheel, adorned like a chakravartin king, blazing with marks and signs, with immeasurable rays of five colors swirling, sitting in the center in the vajra posture, wearing a white silk upper garment and lower skirt, with eyes slightly closed, residing in this manner. In the east, on top of two elephants, on the moon above, separate from the lotus and vajra, is the venerable King Who Completely Purifies All Bad Destinies, with a white body, holding the meditation mudra, marked with a five-pointed white vajra. In the south is the venerable Ratnasambhava, with a blue body, the right and left hands making the varada and meditation mudras respectively, the left hand marked with nine parts of emerald, residing on two horses, on the moon separate from the lotus and vajra. In the north is the venerable Shakyamuni Buddha, shining like pure gold, with hands

The right hand grants supreme bestowal or is in meditative equipoise, while the left hand holds a begging bowl in its palm. Seated on a lotus without a vajra, atop two peacocks. In the north is Jetsun Metok Kundu Gyepa, like a precious jewel of fully bloomed flowers. The right hand bestows refuge, the left rests in meditative equipoise, holding a vajra at its center. Seated on a lotus without a vajra, atop two garudas. These four Buddhas all appear as monks, wearing red monastic robes adorned with golden goose patterns, and seated in the vajra posture. Some say that all five should appear as monks, or like a Chakravartin king. If they are depicted as worldly attendants, it is considered impure. In the southeast, southwest, northwest, and northeast are: Chenrezig and Dakini Mamaki, Pandaravasini, and Tara, like the queen of a deva king or a precious woman, all sixteen years of age. Their colors are white, blue, red, and green, respectively. In their right hands, they hold the fruit of the eye, a five-pronged vajra, a lotus, and an utpala, each matching their own color. Their left hands grant supreme bestowal, and they gaze upon the main deity. Seated on various lotus moons, in the posture of a bodhisattva. This is the essential order. Then, on the sixteen-spoked wheel, starting from the east, from Vajrasattva to Vajramushti. The four in the east are white, the four in the south are blue, the four in the west are red, and the four in the north are green. In their right hands, they hold: vajra hook, arrow and bow, jewel, nima banner, victory banner, finger gesture, lotus, sword, wheel, tongue, action and terror, armor and vajra club. Their left hands rest in meditative equipoise, or they strive to hold their respective emblems with both hands. Seated on various lotus moons, in the posture of a bodhisattva. Like the eldest son of a Chakravartin king, adorned with silk ribbons, they are exceedingly brave and appear full of enthusiasm. Then, in the southeast, southwest, northwest, and northeast between the spokes, seated on various lotus moons.
