How indeed does the stream of mind flow? It does not belong to any direction, hence there is no difference or distinction. Being one without an object of focus, it is the nature of pure and impure realms. Although my body clearly appears as limitless realms and bodies of beings, it is extremely difficult to ascertain whether mind and habitual tendencies are different or one. Thus, everything is me. I am also me. I am also everything, so there is no need to attain a dharma that was not initially attained. It is also extremely difficult to ascertain whether mind and habitual tendencies are one or different. Neither one nor different. For example, it is not appropriate to say that color and shape are one, nor is it appropriate to say that they are different, it is similar to that. If the seventh of the nine divisions, everything is the nature of mind, why does it appear to arise from other causes and conditions? Such is the question. This is the principle of all dependent origination, changing into arising and ceasing, like a rotten seed. From nothing, nothing arises, no cause, no effect. All these dharmas rely on causes, and if there is no basis for the fruit to arise and abide, it will cease. Saying this is like a rotten seed not producing fruit, similarly, all dharmas are not established by their own nature. Without a cause, no effect arises, so it cannot be established that this is the cause and this is the effect. If so, why does it appear to all sentient beings that the fruit arises dependent on the cause? The very nature of the mind that clings to things and discriminates between cause and effect appears as cause and condition. From beginningless time, the very nature of the mind that clings to and discriminates things as the nature of cause and effect, merely appears as cause and effect. Without cause and effect, how can the nature of mind appear in that way? The cause of drinking alcohol in a dream causes the effect of appearing drunk, and dreaming of plowing fields and growing crops, etc., although there are no things of cause and effect, due to the clinging to cause and effect from beginningless time, they appear in dreams, it is similar to that. The eighth of the nine divisions, showing that the appearing things are not established, says that because those two are absent, there is no birth and death. Because those two, cause and effect, are absent.

Since conditions give rise to fruit, without arising, what is the world? There is also no destruction. Since there is no birth or death, there is no self or other. Since there is no dying or transference, there is no permanence or annihilation. If there is no birth and no death, who is called "self"? Who is called "other"? If there is no self and no other, who dies and who is transferred? Thus, since there is no death, there is no annihilation. Since there is no transference, there is no permanence. Therefore, there is no cycle of existence, and it is evident that there is no nirvana. Since there is no birth, death, permanence, annihilation, etc., there is no confusion from one to another, and no cycle of existence. Therefore, it is evident that there is no nirvana that depends on the cycle of existence. The last of the nine divisions shows that the nature of mind, the basis of appearance, is not established. The moment of dwelling never separates, and at that time, equality is also absent. The momentary alaya, the place of habit, and the two habits are never separate. Without the alaya, habits cannot exist. Without habits, the alaya cannot exist. For example, without color, form cannot exist, and without form, color cannot exist. If there is, both exist; if there is not, both do not exist and are equal. Without habits, there is no alaya. Why? Because habits are not real, they are produced by false conceptions. Because they are produced by inverted conceptions, habits cannot be said to exist. If those habits do not exist, then because there is no object of experience, there is no alaya, and there is no consciousness. The object of experience of the alaya is habit, but because there is no habit, there is no object of experience. If there is no object, consciousness does not arise. Therefore, the alaya that depends on the object of experience does not exist, and all consciousness is only non-existent. Since there are no directions, there is no object or place. How do consciousness and awareness arise? As stated above, since none of the directions are established, if there are no habits of objects and no alaya of dwelling, how do the consciousnesses that depend on them arise? Therefore, this mind transcends the extremes of existence and non-existence, and is separate from one and many. Mind and mental factors are not anything at all. Therefore, it is not possible to call the one who transcends existence and non-existence "one," nor is it possible to call it "many." What is purity like?
