Ro! The act of benefiting others is a symbol of wisdom, and "the guide" refers to teaching others with the precepts and oral instructions of discriminating wisdom, eliminating ignorance, and thus mastering all dharmas, thereby guiding those of inferior faculties on the correct and unerring path. This happened in the past, when the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in Prince Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Jeta Grove Monastery, with a great sangha of hundreds of thousands of monks, as well as two hundred million bodhisattvas, countless sons of gods, and the eight classes of gods and demons, all gathered together. At that time, the noble Manjushri Kumara was seated to the right of the Blessed One. At that time, a son of the gods named Ratnachuda thought: How wonderful it would be if Manjushri could teach a dharma of the definitive path that is correct and unerring! At that time, the Blessed One, knowing his thoughts, asked Manjushri. Manjushri said: All dharmas are inexpressible, how can they be spoken? The Blessed One said: Although inexpressible, express it in an expressible way. Manjushri asked: How should the inexpressible be spoken? The Blessed One instructed: Speak from the perspective of the purity of the dharmadhatu. Manjushri reported: If from the perspective of the purity of the dharmadhatu, there is both impurity and purity, and there is no distinction, all dharmas are equality, wouldn't those of inferior intelligence be frightened and afraid? The Blessed One said: Being frightened and afraid is the beginning of entering the right path, so speak! Then, the noble Manjushri ascended the lion throne and said: Sons or daughters of good family, know that all dharmas are equality, samsara and nirvana are without distinction. Samsara is nirvana. Nirvana is samsara. Why is this? Because the dharmata of samsara is nirvana, and the nature of nirvana appears as samsara. At that time, those with sharp faculties attained the tolerance of non-arising dharmas. Those with inferior faculties immediately stood up and said: If this is so, then there is no difference between being ordained and not being ordained, there is no difference between keeping vows and not keeping vows. They said that this dharma is inaction and then fled. At that time, Manjushri

Having emanated as a single monk through magical transformation, Pal sat at the crossroads of the path. There, those of the Shravaka lineage asked him where he had come from. He replied that he had heard that for Manjushri, samsara and nirvana were indistinguishable, and so he was afraid. They asked, "Where are you going?" He said, "I am going to the noble Manjushri." (The emanation monk) said, "Do not go, for you should know that all dharmas are of equal nature." They said, "If that were the case, there would be no difference between good and evil, and there would be many faults." At that point, the emanation monk said, "Then stay here. Is this present appearance the appearance of mind itself, or is it the appearance of matter? Examine it." After they examined it, they said, "It is the appearance of mind itself." (The emanation monk then asked,) "Then, is each of our minds outside or inside? Is it in between, or does it have color or shape, etc.? Examine it. Where does this mind come from in the beginning? Where is it now? Where does it ultimately go? Examine it. Also, where are you yourselves from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet? Think about it." They said, "Like this, after we each examined ourselves, we did not find it." (The emanation monk asked,) "Then, is it non-existent?" They said, "It is just clarity." (The emanation monk asked,) "Then, does that which is not found, in its essence, abide in samsara or nirvana, or in the state of both? Or does it not abide in any state?" They said, "It does not abide in its essence." At that point, the emanation monk said, "Then, what Manjushri said is also intended to be like this, is it reasonable or not?" They said, "It is very reasonable." Then they said, "Let's go ask him." And they came. The emanation monk sat on the lion throne, and those Shravakas came rushing from behind, asking, "What is the fault?" (The emanation monk) said, "Now you are ashamed of running away." There, since all dharmas are of equal nature, there is no shame. Now listen well. (The emanation monk) said, "Explaining the meaning of not reversing the path, the good path is the teacher. By explaining the path without reversing it, one's own benefit is accomplished, and the intention of others is accomplished. Like this, until the end, there is no grasping, so all discriminations are abandoned. Then, how does the body arise in non-discrimination? The inexhaustible arises. For this, the accumulation of causes is necessary, so possessing merit is the accumulation of wisdom, which is the ten perfections. Knowing the difference between wisdom and existence and non-existence is the difference between vehicles. The example shown here is that in the past, in a valley called Anyuta, in a monastery, five wild men went, and they were very thirsty, and they saw a pond.
