What is consciousness? It is the discernment of forms that are to be known by the eye consciousness, similarly, sounds that are to be known by the ear, smells that are to be known by the nose, tastes that are to be known by the tongue, tactile objects that are to be known by the body, and dharmas that are to be known by the mind. This is called consciousness. That which is inwardly peaceful, does not wander outwardly, and does not conceptualize any dharma by relying on wisdom, without any conceptualization, is called wisdom. Furthermore, the arising of consciousness from an object, the arising of consciousness from attention, and the arising of consciousness from complete understanding, this is called consciousness. That which has no grasping, no supreme grasping, no object, no discernment, and no conceptualization, this is called wisdom. Furthermore, consciousness arises for phenomena that are compounded and transient; consciousness does not occur for the uncompounded. That which knows the uncompounded is wisdom. Furthermore, that which abides in arising and ceasing is consciousness. That which abides in non-ceasing is also consciousness. That which abides in non-arising and non-cessation is wisdom, and this is called relying on wisdom and not relying on consciousness. What are the sutras of definitive meaning? And what are the sutras of provisional meaning? Those sutras that teach entering the path are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach for the sake of entering the result are called definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach the establishment of conventional truth are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach ultimate truth are called definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach entering into actions and deeds are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach for the sake of exhausting actions and afflictions are called definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach for the sake of explaining complete affliction are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach for the sake of complete purification are called definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach for the sake of generating aversion to samsara are called provisional.

are called "definitive meaning." Those sutras that explain entering into the inseparability of samsara and nirvana are called "definitive meaning." Those sutras that explain various words and letters are called "provisional meaning." Those sutras that explain the profound, difficult to see, and difficult to comprehend are called "definitive meaning." Those sutras that explain many words and letters, causing sentient beings to rejoice, are called "provisional meaning." Those sutras that explain few words and letters, causing the mind to be certain, are called "definitive meaning." Those sutras that explain self, sentient being, life, nourishment, person, pudgala, power-born, child, agent, experiencer, and explain sound in various ways, and explain the ownerless as having an owner, are called "provisional meaning." Those sutras that explain emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-fabrication, unborn, unarisen, non-thing, selflessness, no sentient being, no life, no pudgala, no owner, up to the door of liberation, are called "definitive meaning." Therefore, one should rely on the sutras of definitive meaning and not rely on the sutras of provisional meaning. What is the nature of reality? What is a person? Whoever abides in the view of a person and engages in some dharma is called a person. Completely understanding the engagement of the view of a person is called the nature of reality. Furthermore, there are ordinary person, ordinary virtuous person, person who follows with faith, person who follows with dharma, eighth person, stream-enterer person, once-returner person, non-returner person, arhat person, solitary buddha person, bodhisattva person. If one person appears in the world, it benefits many beings, brings happiness to many beings, is compassionate to the world, for the sake of the benefit of many beings, such as gods and humans, for the sake of benefit, for the sake of happiness.
